Saturday, February 21, 2009 Women's basketball beats Mount, clinches #2 seed in upcoming conference playoffs

CRESSON, Pa. - Alicia Glasser (Marion Center, PA/Marion Center) scored a game-high 21 points, and the Penn State Altoona women's basketball team shot 48.3% from the field and 50% from beyond the arc to claim an 80-71 victory over Mount Aloysius Saturday and earn the #2 seed in the upcoming conference playoffs.

Tamara Thomas (Altoona, PA/Altoona) added 15 points, while Angie Proper (Bellefonte, PA/Bellefonte) and Kelli Steiner (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) added 14 and 10, respectively, for Altoona, which never trailed in the second half.

Leading 43-34 at intermission, the Lions maintained a comfortable lead and even pushed the advantage to 67-53 on a Thomas lay up with 5:47 left.  Mount cut it to eight with less than three minutes remaining but could not get any closer, concluding its season at 7-18 overall and 5-13 in the league.

Altoona finished its regular season at 16-9 and 13-5 in the AMCC but did not get off to a good start against the Mounties.  The hosts led 15-6 with 14:48 left in the first half, but the Lions erased the deficit to tie the game at 20-20 midway through the period.

A Glasser 3-pointer with 6:16 left pushed the lead to 31-23, and a Steiner free throw with 39 ticks on the clock set the halftime score.

The Lion bench outscored Mount Aloysius reserves 22-6, and Altoona turned 23 Mountie turnovers into 28 points.  Penn State Altoona also held a 38-26 edge in the painted area.

Mount was led by Kaylee Keagy's 19 points and four assists.  Teammate Emily McKenna added 14, and Brooke Bryner and Carlie Frick added 12 apiece.

Penn State Altoona will travel to Pitt-Greensburg Friday, February 27, for an AMCC semifinal game against an opponent to be determined.  Tip-time is either 6:00 PM or 8:30 PM.  Check www.amcconf.org for more details.
