ATHLETIC NEWSMen's basketball closes regular season with win at Mount AloysiusSaturday, February 21, 2009CRESSON, Pa. - Three players scored in double figures, and despite being outscored by 16 points at the free throw line, the Penn State Altoona men's basketball team made 11 more field goals than host Mount Aloysius to come away with a 73-62 victory Saturday afternoon. Senior Colin Geiger (Pottstown, PA/Pottsgrove) scored a team-high 18 points, while brother Curtis Geiger (Pottstown, PA/Pottsgrove) and Kirk Peters (Harrisburg, PA/Susquehanna Township) added 16 points apiece. The Lions led 36-33 at halftime behind six 3-point field goals and 50% shooting (15-of-30) from the floor. The Mounties connected on only 9-of-26 first-half field goals but stayed close by making 12-of-14 free throws in the period. Altoona went 0-for-2 from the line in the opening stanza. After Mount tied the game at 38-38 just 1:36 into the second half, Altoona answered with six straight points and led by seven on a Peters' lay up with 10:03 remaining. The hosts cut the deficit to three on two occasions, but a 6-0 spurt capped by a Colin Geiger basket pushed Altoona's lead to 59-50 with 4:44 left. Mount would get no closer than six the rest of the way, and Altoona would cut into the free throw discrepancy, making 10-of-18 in the final stanza. The Lion bench outscored Mount Aloysius' reserves 27-3 turned 20 Mountie miscues into 20 points. Aloysius did hold a 42-28 advantage on the boards, but it translated into only one more second-chance point than Penn State Altoona tallied. Brian Collins scored 19 points in the losing cause, while Tyrone Lowery added 14, Ben Murray scored 13, and Dan Conway put in 13 more. Altoona finished the game at 45.8% from the field and limited Mount Aloysius to only seven second-half field goals. Mount was a dismal 31.4% on the day and hit only 4-of-22 treys. The Lions canned nine shots from beyond the arc. Penn State Altoona is the #5 seed in the upcoming conference playoffs and will travel to the #4 seed for a first-round game this Tuesday, February 24.
