ATHLETIC NEWSMen's basketball knocked from playoffs by Frostburg StateTuesday, February 24, 2009FROSTBURG, Md. - The first 32 minutes of Tuesday night's Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Quarterfinal game between Penn State Altoona and Frostburg State went back and forth, but an untimely scoring drought over the last eight minutes doomed the visiting Lions as Frostburg pulled out a 63-49 victory to advance to the league semifinals this weekend. A Colin Geiger (Pottstown, PA/Pottsgrove) lay up with 7:57 left tied the game at 46-46 before the Bobcats scored 15 unanswered points over the next seven minutes and led 61-46 with just 1:59 left. During the scoreless stretch, Altoona missed seven shots and committed one turnover. The game featured six ties and 11 lead changes, and neither team shot above 40% from the field. The Lions finished just 28.8% on the night, making 17-of-59 field goals and hitting only seven baskets the entire second half. Frostburg made 13 buckets in half number two and shot 39.3% for the game (22-of-56). Geiger, who along with brother Curtis (Pottstown, PA/Pottsgrove) played their final games in Penn State Altoona uniforms, finished with 12 points. Kirk Peters (Harrisburg, PA/Susquehanna Township) added 10, and freshman Herschell Warren (Philadelphia, PA/Simon Gratz) netted eight points to go along with a team-high seven rebounds. The Bobcats, who advance to play top seed Medaille on Friday, got a game-high 16 points from Brian Anderson. Teammate Busha Koffa had a double-double with 13 points and 14 boards, while Juan Wansley chipped in 11. Frostburg led 17-10 midway through the first half, but the Lions answered with a 12-1 spurt to retake the lead at 22-18. FSU tied things up twice later in the period, and the teams flip-flopped advantages before a Warren lay up gave Penn State Altoona a 29-28 edge at intermission. The hosts retook the lead on a Wansley trey at 15:30 and maintained a slim margin until the game-changing run with less than eight minutes remaining. Neither team shot well from beyond the arc including Altoona, which made only 2-of-18 3-point attempts. Frostburg connected on only 4-of-17 tries. Penn State Altoona concluded the season at 14-12 overall. The 14 wins ties last year's mark and also matches the single-season program record for victories in a season. MORE INFORMATION...
