Baseball splits doubleheader with Trine

Sunday, March 8, 2009 Baseball splits doubleheader with Trine

AUBURNDALE, Fl. - The Penn State Altoona baseball team cranked out 10 hits including three by Grady Luzier (Forest, PA/West Branch) to take game one but couldn't overcome a rough first inning in the nightcap as it split a doubleheader with Trine University Sunday afternoon.

In the opener, Altoona scored three quick runs in the bottom of the first with the help of two Trine errors.  The Thunder took advantage of one of five Lion errors in the top of the second as they put three runs on the board to tie the game.

Trine starter Elliot Gaff was chased in the third inning after allowing a leadoff hit to Luzier and walking two.  Another walk brought home Jim Byers (Chambersburg, PA/Chambersburg), and Tyler Stiffler (Altoona, PA/Altoona) scored the third run of the frame on Jim Baum's (Shermansdale, PA/West Perry) groundout.

Baum doubled home Jim Bennett (Linden, PA/Williamsport) in the fifth inning, and Altoona got some insurance with three runs on three hits in the sixth.  Luzier smacked an RBI triple, and Stiffler added a RBI double to push the Altoona lead to 10-4.

Trine used four hits and a Lion error to get three runs in the seventh before Shaun Delozier (Cape Coral, FL/Ida S. Baker) shut the door for the save.  Starter Tom Rafetto (Malvern, PA/Great Valley) earned the victory, pitching six innings and allowing four runs and five hits.

In the nightcap, Altoona starter Kevin Obermeier (York, PA/York Catholic) could not get out of the first inning, surrendering six runs on four hits.  The six-run first would be the only offensive output for Trine all game, but the Lions also had trouble getting on the scoreboard.

Cord Heine (Malvern, PA/Mercersburg) smacked a home run in the sixth inning, and three straight hits by Luzier, Byers, and Stiffler pulled the Lions to within 6-2.  James Stratico's (McMurray, PA/Peters Township) RBI groundout made it 6-3 heading into the seventh.

RJ Barnard (Hollidaysburg, PA/Hollidaysburg) hit a one-out home run, Bobby Reece (Levittown, PA/Neshaminy) doubled, and Heine singled to put the tying run on first.  But Luzier hit into a double play to end the game and send the Lions to a split.

Penn State Altoona is 3-3 on the season and plays Bowdoin College Tuesday.
