ATHLETIC NEWSSoftball drops pair of games at RoanokeSunday, March 8, 2009ROANOKE, Va. - The Penn State Altoona softball team managed just seven total hits in a pair of losses at Roanoke College Sunday afternoon. The hosts won the opener 6-1 before cruising to a 13-0 five-inning victory in game two. Altoona and Roanoke were scoreless through the first three innings of the opener before the Maroons got two in the fourth and broke the game open with four runs in the fifth frame. Lion starter Andrea Layton left after pitching 4 and 1/3 innings and allowing five runs on five hits. The visitors got their lone run in the seventh inning when Alanna Luzier (Frenchville, PA/Clearfield) singled home Chelsey Rhodes (Williamsburg, PA/Williamsburg). Roanoke pitchers combined to strike out 12 Penn State Altoona hitters in the game. The nightcap saw the Maroons score six runs in the first, one in the second, two in the third, and four more in the fourth to put the game will out of reach. Altoona starter Brittany Hoffman was chased after surrendering six runs and four hits while not recording an out. Altoona managed just one hit and committed five errors leading to four unearned runs. Penn State Altoona is 1-3 on the season and will travel to Ferrum College for a 1:00 PM doubleheader tomorrow. MORE INFORMATION...
