ATHLETIC NEWSMyers' pitching leads Lions to split against BowdoinTuesday, March 10, 2009WINTER HAVEN, Fl. - Freshman Mike Myers (Boiling Springs, PA/Boiling Springs) looked right at home in his first collegiate start, striking out six batters and allowing just two runs through seven innings to help the Penn State Altoona baseball game to a 6-2 first-game victory over Bowdoin. The Lions dropped the nightcap 10-4 and are now 4-4 on the season. After a scoreless first three innings, Altoona broke things open with four runs in the top of the fourth behind a Jim Byers (Chambersburg, PA/Chambersburg) home run and RJ Barnard (Hollidaysburg, PA/Hollidaysburg) two-run double. Bowdoin scored a single run in the bottom of the frame but trailed 4-1 entering the seventh and final inning. The Lions added two insurance scores when Ryan Pollicino (Mount Union, PA/Mount Union) doubled in Grady Luzier (Forest, PA/West Branch) and Chad Snook (Lewistown, PA/Lewistown) singled to score Pollicino. Byers, Luzier, and Jim Baum (Shermansdale, PA/West Perry) all had two hits apiece for Penn State Altoona. Bowdoin committed four errors in the opener and used three different pitchers in the loss. In game two, freshman Shaun Delozier (Cape Coral, FL/Ida S. Baker) cruised through the first five innings and took a 3-1 advantage into the sixth. Bowdoin loaded the bases before Joe Pace smacked a monster grand slam that catapulted the Polar Bears into the lead. Pollicino homered to slice the Lion deficit to 5-4 after the bottom of the sixth, but Bowdoin jumped on Altoona relievers Jesse Cox (Huntingdon, PA/Huntingdon) and Matt McGrogan (West Chester, PA/West Chester Henderson), scoring five runs on four hits and two walks to grab a 10-4 edge. Bowdoin led 1-0 after two innings, but Penn State Altoona took advantage of a third inning error to score three unearned runs on a trio of RBI singles. Delozier suffered the loss, allowing six hits and five earned runs through 5 and 2/3 innings. The Lions are off Wednesday before playing Curry College in a doubleheader Thursday beginning at 1:00 PM.
