Baseball drops a pair to Curry

Thursday, March 12, 2009 Baseball drops a pair to Curry

WINTER HAVEN, Fl. - Senior Paul Keith (Smithmill, PA/Moshannon Valley) went seven strong innings but eventually earned a no decision in the opener before Curry College blew the nightcap wide open en route to a pair of wins over the Penn State Altoona baseball team Thursday in Winter Haven, Florida.

Curry took the opener 2-1 in eight innings and won the second contest 14-0 by banging out 13 hits.

Game one was a classic pitchers duel that watched the Colonels manufacture a run in the third inning off Keith via a pair of singles.  The Lions tied the game in the fifth when Cord Heine (Malvern, PA/Mercersburg) singled home RJ Barnard (Hollidaysburg, PA/Hollidaysburg).

Both teams failed to score again after seven innings, and Keith was lifted in favor of freshman lefty Clint Wilson (Tyrone, PA/Tyrone).  Curry pushed across a lone run in the top of the eighth and Altoona stranded runners on the corners in the bottom of the frame resulting in the 2-1 setback.

Keith scattered four hits and struck out two over his seven innings of mound time.  Freshman Jim Baum (Shermansdale, PA/West Perry) went 3 for 4 in the contest and classmate Jake Settle (Altoona, PA/Altoona) also had a pair of hits.

In game two, Curry scored in each of the first five innings and exploded for a seven-run fifth inning to put the game well out of reach.  Lion starter Gerard Vath (Milford, PA/Delaware Valley) was chased after two innings and five earned runs allowed.

Altoona managed just one hit in the game which came courtesy of Jim Stratico (McMurray, PA/Peters Township).  Cory Collins got the win for the Colonels, pitching six innings and striking out five Lion hitters.

Penn State Altoona dropped to 4-6 overall and will take on Newbury College tomorrow at 9:00 AM.
