Baseball trounces Medaille to start AMCC play at 2-0

Saturday, March 21, 2009 Baseball trounces Medaille to start AMCC play at 2-0

ALTOONA, Pa. - Behind 25 total hits and a pair of complete-game gems by pitchers Paul Keith (Smithmill, PA/Moshannon Valley) and Mike Myers (Boiling Springs, PA/Boiling Springs), the Penn State Altoona baseball team swept Medaille College in both squads' Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference openers by scores of 12-0 and 8-1 Saturday at the Stewart Athletic Field.

Keith fired all seven innings in the opener, scattering two hits and striking out eight Maverick batters.  Offensively, the Lions scored two runs in the second inning and got one in the fourth, two in the fifth, and exploded for seven runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Grady Luzier (Forest, PA/West Branch) and Jimmy Baum (Shermansdale, PA/West Perry) each went 3 for 4, while RJ Barnard (Hollidaysburg, PA/Hollidaysburg), Cord Heine (Malvern, PA/Mercersburg), and Ryan Pollicino (Mount Union, PA/Mount Union) each cracked two base hits.

The Lions took advantage of two Medaille errors to score their two second-inning runs.  Barnard hit an RBI single in the fourth before Heine roped yet another home run, his sixth of the season, in the fifth.

Bobby Reece (Levittown, PA/Neshaminy) had a three-run double in the sixth for Altoona, which improved to 10-6 overall and 2-0 in the AMCC.

Game two featured another dominating performance by a Lion pitcher, this time from Myers.  The freshman allowed just one hit, no earned runs, and fanned five Medaille hitters.

The Lions got plenty of run support for Myers by scoring five in the second inning thanks to three consecutive doubles, a single, and a triple.

Altoona got its final three runs in the bottom of the sixth.  Baum went 4 for 4, and Barnard was 3 for 3 as the duo combined for four runs scored and four RBI.

Penn State Altoona is back in action this Wednesday, March 25, for a 1:00 PM AMCC doubleheader at Pitt-Greensburg.
