ATHLETIC NEWSMen's tennis starts season strong over GreensburgFriday, March 20, 2009GREENSBURG, Pa. - The Penn State Altoona men's tennis team captured a 9-0 shutout over Pitt-Greensburg Friday afternoon when the squad opened Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference play. All six Lion players who competed in singles won in straight sets. Stephen James (Muncy, PA/Hughesville) won his #1 singles match 6-0, 6-1, while freshmen Thomas Van Antwerp (Somerset, PA/Somerset), Kyle Yerty (Roaring Spring, PA/Central), and Adam Buys (New Hope, PA/New Hope) all blanked their singles opponents 6-0, 6-0. Altoona also took all three doubles matches, losing only one game throughout the afternoon. The doubles team of James and Van Antwerp cruised to an 8-0 victory, and the tandem of Andrew Rosborough (Palmyra, PA/Palmyra) and Patrick Bloom (Montoursville, PA/Montoursville) enjoyed another 8-0 sweep. The Lions are now 1-0 on the season, 1-0 AMCC, and they will return to action on Monday, March 23, when the squad will host Penn State Harrisburg at the Ivyside Courts. Match time is set for 3:00 PM.
