Softball suffers pair of AMCC setbacks to Pitt-Greensburg

Wednesday, March 25, 2009 Softball suffers pair of AMCC setbacks to Pitt-Greensburg

ALTOONA, Pa. - The Pitt-Greensburg women's softball team banged out 22 total hits and scored 31 runs in a doubleheader sweep of Penn State Altoona Wednesday afternoon at the Stewart Athletic Field.  The Bobcats won both shortened contests in five innings by scores of 11-1 and 21-9.

In game one, Greensburg pitcher Taylor Kimmel allowed just two hits and surrendered one run while striking out five Lion batters.  Offensively, the Bobcats got two runs in the first and broke the game open with a seven-run second inning, which proved to be plenty of support for Kimmel.

Lion starter Callie Lyle (Brockway, PA/Brockway) gave up 11 runs, only four of which were earned, and allowed seven UPG hits.  Penn State Altoona committed three errors in the game, all coming in the decisive second inning.

Altoona's lone run came in the bottom of the second when Kelly McVay (Coudersport, PA/Coudersport) scored on an Aisha Kassam (Lititz, PA/Warwick) ground out.

In the nightcap, the Lions battled back from a 3-0 deficit, getting to within 3-2 after two complete innings.  But the UPG offense drew 11 walks and collected 11 hits over the final five innings to improve to 2-0 in Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference play.

A six-run third inning put the Bobcats ahead, and a nine-run fourth erased any hopes of a comeback for Penn State Altoona, which dropped to 1-7 overall and 0-2 in the AMCC.

Both teams finished the second game with 14 hits apiece, but the Lions left eight runners on base and despite scoring seven runs in the fourth and fifth innings, were unable to chip into the Greensburg lead.

Andrea Layton (Everett, PA/Everett) took the loss for Penn State Altoona, pitching 2 2/3 innings and allowing nine earned runs while walking seven.  Lindsay Harkins got the win by pitching 1 2/3 frames of relief.

Lyle and Erin Cline (Murrysville, PA/Franklin Regional) each smacked three hits in the second game while Kara Myers (Millheim, PA/Penns Valley) and Chelsey Rhodes (Williamsburg, PA/Williamsburg) had two each.

Greensburg hit four home runs on the day, two courtesy of Lindsay Littler.  In game two, third baseman Kelly Welsh went 4-5 with five RBI and three runs scored.

Penn State Altoona is back in action tomorrow for a 3:00 PM doubleheader at Juniata College.
