ATHLETIC NEWSBaseball struggles in doubleheader with FrostburgTuesday, March 31, 2009ALTOONA, Pa. - It was a rough afternoon for the Penn State Altoona baseball team, which struggled both on the mound and at the plate en route to a pair of Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference losses to Frostburg State Tuesday at the Stewart Athletic Field. The Bobcats won the opener 12-0 before coasting to a 20-8 win in game two. In game one, the Lion bats were silenced by Bobcat pitcher Freddy Foshay, who went all seven innings and allowed a single hit while striking out four. Tyler Stiffler (Altoona, PA/Altoona) had the only Penn State Altoona base knock when he slapped a single to left field in the second inning. The Bobcats scored in five of their seven frames and chased Lion starter Kevin Obermeier (York, PA/York Cathlolic) after 2 2/3 innings and five runs. Only two of those were earned, however, and Frostburg would get five more scores off reliever Tom Rafetto (Malvern, PA/Great Valley) and two from Shaun Delozier (Cape Coral, FL/Ida S. Baker). In game two, Frostburg drew four consecutive walks from Altoona starter Clint Wilson (Tyrone, PA/Tyrone), who was subsequently pulled without recording an out. The Bobcats plated four runs in the first inning and used nine hits along with five Penn State Altoona errors during an incredible 13-run second inning. Three more Lion errors in the fifth helped Frostburg score three more runs and hold a commanding 20-0 lead after 4 1/2 frames. Altoona, which cracked the same number of hits in the game as the Bobcats (14), responded with eight runs over the final three innings. Grady Luzier (Forest, PA/West Branch) went 3 for 4 with five RBI including a 3-run home run in the fifth. Luzier and Cord Heine (Malvern, PA/Mercersburg) each roped run-scoring singles in the sixth, and the Lions manufactured two runs in the seventh before a final strikeout ended the contest. Penn State Altoona dropped to 12-10 overall and 4-4 in the AMCC. The Lions step out of conference Thursday when they host Penn State Harrisburg at 1:00 PM at the Stewart Athletic Field.
