ATHLETIC NEWSOffense falters for softball in losses to FrostburgTuesday, March 31, 2009FROSTBURG, Md. - The Penn State Altoona softball team was unable to muster any consistent offense Tuesday afternoon, dropping a pair of Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference games to Frostburg State. The Lions were on the wrong end of a perfect game in the opener, losing 10-0 in five innings, and dropped the nightcap 9-2. Bobcat pitcher Katelyn Coffee was the story of game one as the hurled a perfect game against the Lions. Coffee allowed no hits and no walks while striking out eight Altoona hitters in the 10-0, five-inning win. The Bobcats led 3-0 after three innings but exploded for seven runs in the fourth inning and cracked 10 hits in the contest. In the nightcap, Altoona jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the first inning thanks to an Erin Cline (Murrysville, PA/Franklin Regional) two-run home run. Frostburg answered with one in the third and took the lead 3-2 by scoring two runs in the fifth. After holding the Lions scoreless in the top of the sixth, FSU broke the game open with a six-run sixth inning despite getting only two hits. The fateful sixth inning began with three consecutive walks followed by an error. A three-run double later in the frame helped the Bobcats gain some breathing room and gave Lion starter Callie Lyle (Brockway, PA/Brockway) the loss. Cline and Andrea Layton (Everett, PA/Everett) each had two hits apiece for Altoona. Frostburg only out-hit the Lions by one, 6-5. Penn State Altoona is back in action Saturday as it travels to Penn State Behrend. First pitch of the doubleheader is 1:00 PM. MORE INFORMATION...
