ATHLETIC NEWSSoftball loses both to Mount AloysiusTuesday, April 7, 2009ALTOONA, Pa. - The Penn State Altoona softball team battled wintry conditions, and the Lions lost both games of a double-header against Allegheny Moutnain Collegiate Conference foe Mount Aloysius College Tuesday afternoon at Stewart Field. The Mounties won the first game 9-1 in five innings before coasting to another 9-1 six-inning victory in game two. In game one, Mount Aloysius scored two runs in the first inning and another in the third before Megan Turiano's (Tyrone, PA/Tyrone) single to center field scored Altoona's lone run of the game. The Mounties would find hot bats in the top of the fifth, scoring six runs on four hits along with two Lion errors. Turiano went 2 for 2 with an RBI, and Kelly McVay (Coudersport, PA/Coudersport) added another hit in one of her two at-bats. Lion starter Callie Lyle (Brockway, PA/Brockway) pitched all five innings, striking out six batters and giving up seven earned runs. In game two, the Mounties again held an early lead, scoring two runs in the first inning ans three more in the second. Altoona's lone run in the game came when McVay would score on a Karen Keim (Nazareth, PA/Nazareth) sacrifice fly. Altoona managed five hits in the contest, all singles. Andrea Layton (Everett, PA/Everett), Kara Myers (Millheim, PA/Penns Valley), McVay, and Turiano all went 1 for 3, while Aisha Kassam went 1 for 2. Layton started on the mound for Lions and pitched all six innings, giving up only two earned runs out of nine total. The Lions are now 3-15 overall, 2-6 AMCC, and are back in action this Thursday, April 9, to host non-conference Penn State Greater Allegheny at Stewart Field. Game time is set for 3:00 PM.
