Thursday, April 9, 2009 Softball splits with non-conference Penn State Greater Allegheny

ALTOONA, Pa. - The Penn State Altoona softball team dropped one of two games in its non-conference double-header against Penn State Greater Allegheny Thursday afternoon at Stewart Field.  The Lions were topped in game one by a score of 11-8, but battled back in game two to claim a 15-3 victory.

In game one, Greater Allegheny held a 6-5 advantage after two innings, and chased Lion starter Callie Lyle (Brockway, PA/Brockway) from the mound after just 1 1/3 innings.  Lyle walked five batters, gave up two hits, and allowed five earned runs.  Andrea Layton (Everett, PA/Everett) would finish the remaining 5 2/3 innings for the Lions, walking six batters and striking out four.

Greater Allegheny had four runs in the sixth after a slim 7-6 advantage over the hosts, and Altoona managed to score two late runs in the seventh thanks to Erin Cline (Murraysville, PA/Franklin Regional) and Kelly McVay (Coudersport, PA/Coudersport), but the Lions' run ended after Ashley Ronan (Ashville, PA/Penn Cambria) struck out swinging.

The Lions managed 13 hits in the game to Greater Allegheny's eight.  Cline led the Lions going 3 for 4 with four RBI, and Kara Myers (Millheim, PA/Penns Valley) went 2 for 4 and batted in two runners.  Freshman Alanna Luzier (Frenchville, PA/Clearfield) also cracked three hits and scored two runs.

In game two, Altoona took the victory after a Greater Allegheny injury forced the game to conclude after 4 innings.

The Lions held a 5-3 advantage after three, and Altoona held on to the lead by scoring an impressive 10 runs in the bottom of the fourth to put the game out of reach.

Cline got the Lions rolling with a two-run home run over the left field fence, and Myers added a three-run shot in the fourth which brought home three Altoona runners.  Cline went 4 for 4 on the day with four RBI, while Myers went 4 for 4 with six RBI.

Lyle relieved Lion starter Chelsea Rhodes (Williamsburg, PA/Williamsburg) after 2 2/3 innings, and allowed no hits for the visitors.

Altoona is now 4-16 and the squad is back in action on Friday, April 10, for a 3:00 meeting with Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference foe Medaille at Stewart Field.
