ATHLETIC NEWSLong balls, miscues help Bradford slip past softballSaturday, April 11, 2009ALTOONA, Pa. - Pitt-Bradford took advantage of six Penn State Altoona errors in game one and blasted three home runs in the nightcap en route to a doubleheader sweep of the Lions in Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference softball action Saturday at Stewart Field. UPB won the opener 8-3 and took game two 9-4. Pitt-Bradford jumped out to a 4-0 lead after two innings in the opener and eventually would get eight scores off Altoona starter Callie Lyle (Brockway, PA/Brockway). Only two of those runs were earned, however, as the six Lion errors resulted in six unearned Bradford tallies. Altoona actually out-hit the Panthers 7-6 and got two base knocks from Andrea Layton (Everett, PA/Everett). Her RBI single in the fourth put the Lions on the board, and teammate Alanna Luzier (Frenchville, PA/Clearfield) smacked a two-run single in the seventh. Jillian Kreitzer cruised to the victory for Bradford, firing all seven innings and striking out six batters. In game two, Erin Cline (Murrysville, PA/Franklin Regional) gave Penn State Altoona an early 3-0 lead after blasting a three-run home run in the first. Bradford responded with one in the second and back-to-back home runs in the third to tie the score. But miscues would again hurt the Lions as UPB plated three runs in the fifth and sixth innings, using two more Altoona errors to tack on another unearned run. The Lions again out-hit the visitors 12-11 but left nine runners on base. Layton went 3 for 4 in the nightcap while Cline and Luzier each had two hits. Layton suffered the loss on the mound, hurling six innings and striking out two. Penn State Altoona dropped to 4-18 overall and 2-8 in the AMCC.
