ATHLETIC NEWSSoftball opens road trip with two losses to MedailleFriday, April 17, 2009BUFFALO, Ny. - The Penn State Altoona softball team, playing its second of three consecutive Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference doubleheaders, dropped two games to league foe Medaille College by scores of 5-1 and 11-3 Friday afternoon. Altoona out-hit the host Mavericks 8-5 in the opener but left eight runners on base and watched Medaille score in each of the final three innings. Lion pitcher Andrea Layton (Everett, PA/Everett) went the distance before suffering the loss and allowing four earned runs and walking four batters while fanning five. The visitors' only run came in the top of the seventh after already trailing 5-0. Moira Foley (Philadelphia, PA/John W. Hallahan) singled home Aisha Kassam (Lititz, PA/Warwick) but the inning ended with two runners aboard. Kara Myers (Millheim, PA/Penns Valley) went 2 for 3 in the game and seven of the Lions' nine starters recorded a base hit. In game two, Medaille pounded out 14 hits off of Altoona pitcher Chelsey Rhodes (Williamsburg, PA/Williamsburg) and scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth to invoke the eight-run rule. After a Myers RBI double in the top of the first, the Mavs answered with five in the bottom of the inning, got one in the second, and added two more in the third. The Lions got two back in the third when Erin Cline (Murrysville, PA/Frankin Regional) stroked a two-run triple. Ten of the 11 Medaille runs were earned although Altoona did commit three errors. Cline and Foley each had two hits in the contest for Altoona, which fell to 5-21 overall and 3-11 in the AMCC. The squad is at Franciscan University tomorrow afternoon for a 1:00 PM doubleheader.
