ATHLETIC NEWSSoftball picks up split against FranciscanSaturday, April 18, 2009STEUBENVILLE, Oh. - In the squad's second road trip in as many days, the Penn State Altoona softball team dropped one of its two Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference games to Franciscan Saturday afternoon. The Lions lost game one 6-4, but bounced back to claim a 10-2 victory in game two. In game one, Franciscan jumped out to an early 2-1 lead in the first, and the Barons would use two runs in both the fifth and sixth innings to put the Lions away for good. Altoona made a late rally scoring tow runs in the seventh, but the game would end on a Karen Keim (Nazareth, PA/Nazareth) groundout. Ashley Ronan (Ashville, PA/Penn Cambria) led the Lions going 2 for 4, while Erin Cline (Murraysville, PA/Franklin Regional), Andrea Layton (Everett, PA/Everett), and Aissha Kassam (Lititz, PA/Warwick) each contributed an RBI. Layton pitched a complete game for the visitors, giving up 11 hits and five earned runs while striking out seven Baron batters. As a team, Franciscan had six errors on the afternoon, making all four of the Lions' runs unearned. Altoona cracked eight hits with only one error. In game two, the Lions hit their stride early, putting up four runs in both the first and second innings. Cline got the squad started by hitting home teammate Alanna Luzier (Frenchville, PA/Clearfield), and Kara Myers sent Cline home after doubling to right center. Cline went 4 for 4 with three runs and an RBI, while Ronan connected on all three of her at-bats for an RBI. Layton and Kassam would also contribute two and three RBI, respectively. The Lions compiled 15 hits in the game and had no errors, while the Barons cracked seven hits with four mishaps. Lion starter Chelsey Rhodes (Williamsburg, PA/Williamsburg) picked up the win, going all five innings and striking out four Franciscan batters. The Lions are now 6-22 overall, 4-12 AMCC, and will be back in action this Tuesday, April 21, to take on non-conference opponent Juniata College. Game time is set for 3:30 PM at Stewart Field.
