ATHLETIC NEWSBig innings lead baseball to split with Mounties, three seed in playoffsSaturday, April 25, 2009ALTOONA, Pa. - Cord Heine (Malvern, PA/Mercersburg) hit three home runs, two in the nightcap, and the Penn State Altoona baseball team scored all 11 of its runs during the fourth and sixth innings of game two en route to a doubleheader split with Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference rival Mount Aloysius Saturday at the Stewart Athletic Field. Mount won the opener 13-10 before Altoona came from behind to win the second contest 11-7. The win gives Penn State Altoona the number three seed in the upcoming conference playoffs which begin next Saturday, May 2. The Lions will host the number six seed which will be determined early next week. In game one, Mount Aloysius out-hit the Lions 13-8 in a sloppy game that saw each team commit five errors. The Mounties held a commanding 8-0 lead after 4 1/2 frames before Altoona finally got to pitcher Chad Mattis, chasing him from the game in the fifth. The Lions scored nine runs in the fifth, batting around the order, and got a three-run Heine home run. Jim Bennett (Linden, PA/Williamsport) also stroked a two-run single as Altoona had only four hits during the frame. Mount retook the lead in the top of the sixth, scoring three runs, and Altoona got one in the bottom of the inning when Jim Byers (Chambersburg, PA/Chambersburg) hit a solo bomb. The visitors added two insurance runs in the top of the seventh, and Altoona reliever Matt McGrogan suffered the loss after hurling three innings. Game two started the same way with Mount jumping out to a 6-0 lead on Lion ace Paul Keith (Smithmill, PA/Moshannon Valley) after three innings. The Mounties led 7-0 entering the bottom of the fourth when Altoona used another big inning to score five runs. Grady Luzier (Forest, PA/West Branch) smacked a three-run home run and Heine followed up with a solo shot. Keith would settle down and hold the visitors scoreless the rest of the way. Altoona's offense once again responded to the call in the sixth, scoring six runs in large part thanks to a Luzier three-run double and Heine two-run blast. Keith earned his sixth win by pitching the entire game and tied the Penn State Altoona single-season wins record in the process. Penn State Altoona will play non-league foe Waynesburg University on Tuesday at 1:00 PM in Waynesburg. Playoff information will be announced early next week. MORE INFORMATION...
