WAYNESBURG, Pa. - The Penn State Altoona baseball team stepped out of conference on Tuesday for a doubleheader against Waynesburg University, and the Lions claimed victory in both outings for their 12th win in 13 games.  Altoona picked up a 14-10 win in game one before escaping with an 11-9 victory in game two.

In game one, the Lions jumped out to an 11-0 lead through 4 1/2 innings thanks to Jimmy Baum's (Shermansdale, PA/West Perry) three-run home run in the fifth.  The Yellow Jackets would respond with a two-run fifth and a five-run sixth, and both teams notched three runs a piece in the seventh.

Baum went 2 for 5 with three RBI from the leadoff position, while teammates Jim Byers (Chambersburg, PA/Chambersburg) and Cord Heine (Malvern, PA/Mercersburg) each had three hits for the visitors.  Ryan Pollicino (Mount Union, PA/Mount Union) added three RBI to his season total when he homered in the third, and John Schall (Snow Shoe, PA/Bald Eagle) connected on two of his five at-bats with 3 RBI.

Lion starter Gerard Vath (Milford, NJ/Delaware Valley) went four full innings and gave up four hits with three strikeouts and a walk, and Matt McGrogan (West Chester, PA/West Chester Henderson) would give up seven earned runs in relief before Jesse Cox (Huntingdon, PA/Huntingdon) picked up the save in the seventh.

In game two, the Lions found themselves down 6-5 after four innings before hitting their stride with a six-run fifth to put the game away.  In the decisive frame, Schall got the squad rolling with a solo home run to lead off the inning, and RJ Barnard (Hollidaysburg, PA/Hollidaysburg) and Grady Luzier (Forest, PA/West Branch) would each tally two RBI.

Barnard went 3 for 5 in the game with two RBI, and Luzier would connect on two of his four at-bats with three RBI.  Heine also blasted his 16th homerun of the season in the nightcap, continuing his record-breaking season.

The win went to Kevin Obermeier (York, PA/York Catholic), who went all seven innings for Altoona.  Of the 11 total Yellow Jacket runs, only five were earned, and Obermeier gave up 11 hits and struck out four Wyanesburg batters.

The Lions are now 25-13 and will finish up the regular season on Thursday, April 30, at non-conference Juniata College before starting the AMCC playoffs on Saturday at Stewart Field.
