ATHLETIC NEWSDelozier pitches baseball to split with JuniataThursday, April 30, 2009HUNTINGDON, Pa. - Freshman Shaun Delozier (Cape Coral, FL/Ida S. Baker) pitched a complete game four-hitter in the opener to help the Penn State Altoona baseball team to a doubleheader split with non-conference foe Juniata College Thursday afternoon. The Lions won the first game 6-2 but fell in the nightcap by a 4-2 count. Delozier allowed just two runs and walked only one batter to earn the opening-game victory. The contest was knotted at 2-2 entering the last inning before Altoona tacked four runs on the scoreboard to pull ahead. The deciding frame featured a Cord Heine (Malvern, PA/Mercersburg) two-run single followed by a John Schall (Snow Shoe, PA/Bald Eagle) double that scored the final two runs. The Lions cracked the scoring column first when RJ Barnard (Hollidaysburg, PA/Hollidaysburg) slapped an RBI single in the third. Juniata answered with two in the bottom of the fourth before Barnard again came up with an RBI base knock in the fifth, tying the game. Juniata used four pitchers in the contest, which featured only 10 total hits. Altoona out-hit the Eagles 6-5 in the second game but committed eight errors that led to three unearned runs. Left-hander Clint Wilson (Tyrone, PA/Tyrone) pitched well enough to win, allowing one walk and striking out six in six innings of work. The Eagles plated two unearned runs in the bottom of the third inning without getting a single hit. The Lions made four errors in the frame and allowed Juniata to tack on another unearned run in the fourth via a fielding error. Trailing 4-0 after four innings, the Lions plated a pair of runs in the top of the sixth when Schall and Jim Byers (Chambersburg, PA/Chambersburg) each had RBI hits. But the Altoona bats were unable to make another seventh inning rally as Wilson suffered the loss on the mound. Juniata, which made two miscues, left 10 runners on base compared to six left stranded by the visitors. Byers and Schall each finished the game with two hits apiece. Penn State Altoona is 26-14 overall and will host Pitt-Bradford on Saturday in the first round of the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference playoffs. First pitch of the best-of-three series is set for 10:00 AM. MORE INFORMATION...
