ATHLETIC NEWSMiscues prove costly as baseball falls in AMCC Championship gameSunday, May 10, 2009ERIE, Pa. - In an Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Championship clash that saw both Penn State Altoona and Penn State Behrend commit five errors each, it was the host and top-seeded Behrend Lions that turned those miscues into unearned runs in a 7-2 victory over the Altoona Lions Sunday morning in Erie. Behrend captured its second straight AMCC title and will compete in the NCAA Division III Tournament beginning Wednesday. Penn State Altoona, which holds a school-best 30-17 record, will hope for a bid in the Eastern College Athletic Conference South Region Tournament which also begins Wednesday. Penn State Behrend out-hit third seed Penn State Altoona 10-7 and got a masterful pitching performance from Fran Haus, who went 7 2/3 innings and allowed no earned runs. Reliever Ben Cain hurled the final 1 1/3 frames and did not allow a hit. Altoona starter Kevin Obermeier (York, PA/York Catholic) went five innings and surrendered five runs, but only one was earned. Penn State Altoona grabbed a 2-1 lead in the top of the fourth when the Erie Lions made three errors and Tyler Stiffler (Altoona, PA/Altoona) roped an RBI single. But Behrend responded with a pair of unearned runs in the fifth that came around via a Geoff Lang two-run single. Altoona again hurt itself with throwing errors and past balls in the sixth, allowing two more unearned runs to cross home plate. Trailing 5-2 after six full innings, Penn State Behrend manufactured single runs in both the seventh and eighth frames while Altoona left 10 runners stranded on the day. Stiffler and RJ Barnard (Hollidaysburg, PA/Hollidaysburg) each had two hits in defeat. Penn State Altoona will learn if it received an ECAC bid Monday afternoon. MORE INFORMATION...
