ATHLETIC NEWSMen's Soccer Overcomes Deficit, Rain in Double Overtime WinSaturday, September 26, 2009
ALTOONA, Pa. - After watching the Penn State Altoona women's soccer team play to a 0-0 double overtime tie in the first game of a women's-men's soccer doubleheader, the men's team may have had deja vu when they found themselves tied 1-1 with Penn State Behrend midway through double overtime. But Joe DeSteffano (Solebury, Pa./New Hope-Solebury) scored the game-winner at the 6:50 mark of the second overtime period in a scramble in front of the net, giving Penn State Altoona the 2-1 victory over Behrend on Saturday at Spring Run Stadium. Behrend opened the scoring 21:48 into the first half on Jerry Tortella's goal. With sloppy field conditions due to heavy rain, a 1-0 deficit may have seemed twice as large to the Lions. But Nicholas Kline (Camp Hill, Pa./Camp Hill) came up big for Penn State Altoona, tying the game at 1-1 with 19 minutes left in the second half. After a back-and-forth first overtime, Jack Hooper (New Brighton, MN/Totino Grace) launched a corner kick that bounced to DeSteffano, who lined it into the net for the game-winner.
