Lion golf team eliminated from NCAA Tournament after missing cut
5.16.07
The Penn State Altoona golf team's 2007 NCAA Tournament run came to an end Wednesday as the Lions failed to make the cut after two rounds of competition.  Head coach Tom Koehle's squad shot a team score of 337 (+49) Wednesday, which placed Altoona 29th overall, six spots below the cut line.  Of the 35 participating teams, only the top 23 advance to the final two rounds on Thursday and Friday.  After finishing day one tied for 22nd overall with a team 321 (+33) at Hawthorns Golf and Country Club, the Lions struggled  at neighboring Prairie View Golf Club Wednesday.  The best individual score was courtesy of Derek Bailey (Berwick, PA/Berwick), who fired an 81 (+9).  Teammate Jake Biltz (Hollidaysburg, PA/Hollidaysburg) shot an 11-over 83 while junior Quintin Dziabo (Cresson, PA/Penn Cambria) checked in with a +12 84.  Courtney Jones (Ligonier, PA/Ligonier Valley) was the fourth and final contributor to the overall team score, shooting a +17 89.  R.J. Cilley (Hershey, PA/Hershey) shot a +26 98.  Through both days, Penn State Altoona managed just eight birdies.  After Wednesday's second round, a new individual leader emerged from the pack in St. John's University (MN) standout Clinton Dammann.  He enters Thursday at -1, the only player in the 180-man field currently in the red.  St. John's is also leading the team standings with a two-day score of 600 (+24; +12 Tuesday, +12 Wednesday).  To follow the final two rounds of the 2007 NCAA Division III Men's Golf Tournament, visit the official Golfstat website at www.golfstat.com

Lions win Penn State Altoona Invitational
9.25.06

Freshman Jake Biltz of Hollidaysburg posted a 74 Monday at Sinking Valley Country Club to win the Penn State Altoona Fall Invitational.  Penn Cambria grad Quintin Dziabo and Derek Bailey added 78s, tying for third.  Nick McLaughlin fired a 79 to tie for sixth for the Lions.  The Lions took the team title as well.

Biltz took the individual title by 3 shots over Gary Dillaman of Penn State Behrend.  Biltz has been on a tear lately shooting three 74s and a 76 in his first four college tournaments.

"Jake is a hard worker.  His local knowledge certainly helped today, but he played a steady round of golf, avoided big mistakes and made a lot of pars when he had to," said Lions' head coach Tom Koehle.

The Lions finished with a 312 total, a distant 13 shots ahead of second place Frostburg State.  The victory runs their season record to 37-2, with two wins and two second place finishes in four events.

In women's action, Penn State Altoona's Jenna Rothermel won by a distant 16 shots claiming her third tournament in as many tries.  Her 75 followed a school record 74 Thursday.

"We were truly fortunate to have Jenna playing at Penn State Altoona.  She is a tremendous asset to the team and certainly has a bright future ahead of her," Koehle said.

The Lions will be back in action Tuesday as Mount Aloysius hosts its annual invitational at Summit Country Club.

Men's golfer, women's soccer goalkeeper nab AMCC awards
9.18.06
Two Penn State Altoona student-athletes have been named AMCC Players of the Week for their accomplishments over the past seven days.  Junior men's golfer Quintin Dziabo (Cresson, PA/Penn Cambria) and freshman women's soccer goalkeeper Carol Opiela (Springfield, VA/Springfield) represent the first two Player of the Week selections so far this year for any Lion sports.  Dziabo nabbed the honor for his outstanding play at the Pitt-Bradford Invitational, where he won the individual championship by shooting an even-par 72 and helped propel the Lions to the overall team title.  Opiela was named the AMCC Goalkeeper of the Week by recording her second shutout in four starts as the Lions downed Bethany College 1-0.  She had three saves in the contest.

Men's Golf wins Pitt-Bradford tournament; women's golf finishes third
9.18.06
Penn State Altoona golf coach Tom Koehle knew his Lion squad had a chance to be right at the top of the AMCC in 2006.  And if two matches are any indication, the Lions will be serious contenders at the AMCC Championships three weeks from now in Painesville, OH.  After finishing second to Frostburg State by one stroke on September 7, the men's golf team nipped the third-place finishing Bobcats (315) and runner-up Hobart College (310) in a tie breaker to take the tournament title.  The Lion men also finished with a 310, but the tournament was decided in a tie breaker going down to the fifth and final score.  Altoona's Chris Bullington shot an 85 to best Hobart's Jon Ritter (86) and give the Lions first place out of the 13-team field.  Junior Quintin Dziabo was the overall individual champion, shooting an even-par 72.  Freshman Jake Biltz finished with a 76 on the afternoon, tying him for third place.  R.J, Cilley (80) and Derek Bailey (82) rounded out the champions' scorecard.

On the women's side, Penn State Altoona's Jenna Rothermel set the women's school record by shooting a four-over 76 on the afternoon.  She was the overall individual champion and finished a distant nine shots ahead of the second place finisher, Brittany McLean of Pitt-Bradford.  This match marked the debut of women's golf as a team sport at Penn State Altoona.  The other three Lady Lion golfers were Jena Smolko (107), Jaclyn Gryzminski (111) and Anne Tice (164).  Altoona finished third out of the three-team field, as the Penn State Behrend women's squad did not have a team score because only three golfers participated.

Both teams are back in action Thursday at the Penn State Behrend Invitational.  Last season at Behrend, the men's team tied the school record at the Peak N' Peek course with a five-man total of 298.  The men's team is currently 18-1 on the season.

Men's Golf finishes second overall at Frostburg
9.8.06
The Penn State Altoona men's golf team finished a close second to host Frostburg State in the squad's first tournament of the season.  The five Lion golfers, Jake Biltz (Hollidaysburg, PA/Hollidaysburg), RJ Cilley (Hershey, PA/Hershey), Quintin Dziabo (Cresson, PA/Penn Cambria), Derek Bailey (Berwick, PA/Berwick), and Chris Bullington (Bedford, PA/Bedford) combined to shoot a 317, just one stroke behind the winners from Frostburg State's white team.  Biltz finished tied for a match-best 74, but lost in a playoff to Sean Buenger from Frostburg State.  Cilley and Dziabo shot 80's while Bailey and Bullington finished with 83's for the runner-up Lions.  La Roche finished third out of the eight attending teams by shooting a combined 321.  The next match for the Lions men's golf team will be September 16 when they travel to Pitt-Bradford's annual tournament.  This is also the debut of the Penn State Altoona women's golf team, which consists of six female golfers.  Tee off is at 1:00 PM.
