Franklin, Dziabo named AMCC all-conference
2.26.07
Two Penn State Altoona men's basketball players, senior guard Tyler Franklin and junior forward Quintin Dziabo, were named Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference men's basketball all-stars Sunday evening.  Franklin, an Altoona High School graduate, was one of five players selected to the AMCC first team while Dziabo, a Penn Cambria alumnus, was named honorable mention.  This is Franklin's third straight postseason recognition from the AMCC as he garnered second team honors in 04-05 and first team distinction last year.  Dziabo has twice been named to the first team all-conference golf squad and was named Player of the Year this fall.  The honorable mention selection marks his first postseason basketball honor.  Franklin will leave Penn State Altoona as the school's all-time leading scorer with 1,533 career points.  He averaged 18 points and 5.5 rebounds a game and finished in the AMCC top 10 in nearly every offensive category.  Dziabo, who will return for his senior campaign next year, averaged 13 points, six boards, and will lead a Lion squad that returns all but two players.  Hilbert's Dallas Reinard and Medaille's Amanda Baker were named the conference men's and women's Players of the Year, respectively.  Reinard, who is the AMCC's leading scorer with 22.1 ppg and the most accurate three-point shooter (43.8%), led the Hawks to the conference semifinals for the second season in a row.
This marks the third season in a row that Baker has either shared or earned the P.O.Y award.  Averaging 16.1 ppg and 9.0 rpg, she helped the Lady Mavericks to their second consecutive conference title on February 24.

Lion men ousted in first round of AMCC playoffs
2.20.07
Pitt-Bradford outscored visiting Penn State Altoona 36-24 in the second half to claim a 61-49 victory in the first round of the AMCC Tournament Tuesday night in Bradford.  The Panthers, seeded 3rd, will move on to the conference semifinals against second seeded Penn State Behrend Friday evening.  With the Altoona Lions clinging to a 34-33 advantage with 14:01 remaining, Pitt-Bradford finally came alive and used an 18-3 run to stake a 51-37 lead 10 minutes later, putting the game out of reach for the visitors.  Dan Thomas scored a game high 20 points, Sean DePue had 12, and Mark Austin chipped in 10 for the victors, who improved to 14-12 overall.  Altoona concluded its season at 10-16 overall and made the conference tournament for the first time since 2003-2004.  Playing once again without senior standout Tyler Franklin, it was Lion guard Colin Geiger who picked up the scoring in the first half, netting 15 of the Lions 25 points in the stanza.  The contest was knotted at 25 heading to intermission as the Panthers ended the period on a 6-0 run to even the score.  Geiger was held to just two in the second half and finished with a team high 17 points.  Quintin Dziabo was the only other player in double figures with 13.  Pitt-Bradford dominated in the painted area, outscoring the Lions 24-8, and out-rebounded the visitors 38-25.  Altoona shot just 9-30 in the second half and 36% for the game.  The squad finished with the most wins in a season since Penn State Altoona became affiliated with the NCAA.

First half draught dooms Lion men in loss to Mounties
2.17.07
After springing to a 23-15 lead midway through the first half, the Penn State Altoona men's basketball team went scoreless the final 9:29 of the period en route to a 77-68 loss at Mount Aloysius Saturday.  The home team scored 13 points in that decisive span and held a 28-23 lead at intermission.  The Lions got as close as one, 37-36, more than five minutes into the second half, but Mount would outscore the visitors 40-32 the rest of the way and use a 10-2 run midway through the second half to break the game open.  Altoona shot a dismal 9-36 (25%) from the field in the first half and connected on 5-18 three pointers in the contest.  Playing their second straight game without senior standout Tyler Franklin, Altoona struggled for points but did place three players in double figures.  Colin Geiger had a team high 14 while Quintin Dziabo and Mike Dancer each tallied 13 for Altoona, who dropped to 10-15 overall and 8-10 in AMCC play.  Mount Aloysius, who honored guards AJ Bender and Roman Mims before the game as part of senior day, got 21 points from Sam Hanik, 12 from Mims, 11 from Phil Brandreth, and 10 from Edgar Sampson.  Mount shot 43% from the field, 51% in the second half, and out-rebounded the smaller Lions 43-32.  The squad will most likely earn the #6 seed in the upcoming AMCC playoffs and will probably travel to Pitt-Bradford for a first round game, however, more details will be released later today.

Gasbarre's free throw lifts Lion men to historical win
2.15.07
Justin Gasbarre stole an errant pass and made one of two free throws with 1.6 seconds remaining to give Penn State Altoona a much needed 69-68 victory over Pitt-Greensburg Thursday evening at the Adler Gym.  The Lions improved to 10-14 overall, setting a new school record for wins in a season, and 8-9 in the AMCC.  Penn State Altoona has twice had nine win seasons since its NCAA affiliation began in 1998 but never had eclipsed double digit victories.  With the visiting Bobcats leading by four (68-64) with four minutes and change remaining, Lenny Castor hit two big free throws with 2:35 left and, two minutes later, Quintin Dziabo converted the tying lay up with 36 ticks on the clock.  Gasbarre picked off a poor Tim Gustin pass with seven seconds left and flew down the court, only to be fouled on the lay up attempt.  After leaving the first free throw short, Gasbarre canned the second and a desperation half court shot by Greensburg's Rashad Davison fell short.  The Bobcats dropped to 2-22 overall and 2-15 in AMCC play.  With 12:21 remaining in the game and Altoona up 57-51, Pitt-Greensburg used a 15-2 run to turn the tables until the final seven minutes. After trailing 66-59 with 7:08 to play, the Lions finished the game on a 10-2 run to seal the deal and keep themselves alive for the conference playoffs beginning next week.  Altoona shot a blazing 60% from the field in the game and held a 41-39 advantage at intermission.  The Lions led by as many as nine in the first half before Greensburg sliced the lead.  Quintin Dziabo was a force inside and pushed the Lions over the hump, scoring 24 points on 9-13 shooting.  Teammate Colin Geiger scored 10 as ten different Lions registered at least nine minutes of court time.  Greensburg was fronted by Chris Strreet's 16 points that included four triples.  Davison had 15 and Gustin had 14 in the losing effort.  Lion seniors Barry Minemyer and Tyler Franklin were honored before the opening tip as part of Senior Night.  Altoona is back in action Saturday and can clinch a playoff berth with a win at local rival Mount Aloysius.  Tip time is 4 PM.

Men's basketball drops heart breaker to Medaille in overtime
2.10.07
James McNeil sunk two free throws to send the game to overtime then scored six of his game high 37 points in the extra session to give Medaille a 77-76 overtime win over Penn State Altoona Saturday afternoon at the Adler Gym.  Quintin Dziabo made a tough lay up in traffic with 45 seconds remaining in regulation to give Altoona a 66-64 advantage before some late game drama would unfold.  McNeil sank a pair of free throws with 30 ticks to play and Curt Geiger's game winner bounced in and out for the Lions, who overcame a 17-4 deficit at the start of the contest.  The teams exchanged leads in OT before Geiger hit two freebees to extend the Lion lead to four.  But Bill Gersitz, who hit the game winner in the teams' earlier meeting, converted a three point play and McNeil added two more free throws giving Medaille a 77-76 lead late.  Altoona's final shot, a Zach Spitz jumper from the foul line, bounced away as the Lions fell to 9-14 overall and 7-9 in AMCC play.  Medaille, still clawing for a playoff spot, improved to 10-13 and 6-10 in the conference.  After the Lions cut the Medaille lead to 25-22 with under four minutes remaining in the first half, the Mavs hit three straight three pointers and took an eight point lead (36-24) into the break.  The visitors shot a blazing 14-27 in the first half (52%) and hit 6-11 threes.  Altoona started slowly, hitting just 12 first half field goals and shooting 2-9 from three point land.  McNeil also broke the 1,000 point plateau for his career via his first jumper in overtime.  Medaille, which shot 19 free throws in the game, made 13 compared to five makes on ten attempts for the Lions.  The Lions scored 40 points in the paint and got 39 bench points compared to just nine from the Medaille reserves.  Chris Moscato was the only other Maverick in double figures, scoring 15 points.  Geiger had a career high 22 points, Dziabo chipped in 17, and Tyler Franklin scored 10 for Altoona, who returns to action Wednesday to face Pitt-Greensburg for senior night at the Adler Gym.

Franklin, Dancer help Lions hang on for win over Frostburg
2.7.07
The Penn State Altoona men's basketball team held a comfortable 59-38 lead with just 7:32 left in the contest Wednesday night against visiting Frostburg State.  Then the Bobcats came to life and almost did the unthinkable, outscoring Altoona 35-17 the rest of the way and staging a furious comeback only to fall short 76-73 in front of a raucous crowd at the Adler Gym.  The Bobcats' Dale DeBerry sliced the lead to 10 (61-51) with 4:40 to play and, just over a minute later, Mikah Cooper hit a lay up to cut the deficit to five.  After two Zach Spitz foul shots with 52 seconds to play extended the Lion lead to five, Jermaine Kapombe drained a three with 21 ticks left to pull Frostburg within two.  But Altoona senior guard Tyler Franklin refused to let his team lose, hitting two foul shots down the stretch and finishing with a game high 24 points.  Curtis Geiger drained two more freebees before Brian Green hit a desperation three for the Bobcats to set the final.  Altoona led 33-25 at intermission and shot 42% from the field compared to 37% by the visiting Bobcats.  Frostburg hurt itself from the free throw line, connecting on just 16-31 attempts at the stripe including 3-10 in the first half.  The Lions were solid from the line, especially down the stretch, hitting 77% of its attempts (27-35).  Altoona got a huge contribution from Mike Dancer, who came off the bench to score 19 points and hit 5-7 threes.  The Lions outscored Frostburg 21-9 over the first ten minutes of the final period and made 11 of 17 field goals in the half.  The Bobcats, who fell to 10-12 overall and 9-6 in AMCC play, got 23 points from Dale DeBerry, 14 from Makiha Cooper, and 13 from Brian Green.  Standouts Keith Hazel and Antoine McCall combined for just 13 total points, and McCall fouled out with seven minutes left in the game.  The Lions, who improved to 9-13 overall and 7-8 in the conference, moved even closer to securing an AMCC playoff spot.  The squad returns to action Saturday when Medaille comes to the Adler Gym for a 3 PM tip.

Behrend starts fast, holds off Penn State Altoona men
2.3.07
Penn State Behrend opened the game on a 7-0 run and would not trail throughout en route to a 77-61 victory over visiting Penn State Altoona Saturday evening in Erie.  After the Altoona Lions cut the lead to 10-7 via a Colin Geiger triple, Behrend scored the next eight points to push the lead to double digits.  The home team led 36-23 at the break and shot 52% from the field in the first half.  Altoona connected on 9-19 first half field goals (47%) but was hurt by the slow start.  The Behrend Lions hit five three pointers in the first half and eight for the game while Altoona connected on 4-13 treys.  The visiting Lions sliced the lead to nine (69-60) with under three minutes to play in the contest, but Behrend ended the game on an 8-1 run to set the final.  Nine players saw at least 11 minutes of floor time for the victors, who improved to 15-5 overall and 13-1 in AMCC play.  Last year's AMCC Player of the Year Kevin Buczynski had a team high 16 points and grabbed seven rebounds.  Justin Kovac and Tom Newman each chipped in 10 a piece.  Altoona, who shot 51% from the floor in the game, was led by Tyler Franklin's 22 points.  Geiger had 13 and Zach Spitz tallied 10 for Altoona, who dropped to 8-13 overall and 6-8 in conference play.  The squad is back in action on Wednesday, February 7, when Frostburg State comes to the Adler Gym.  Tip time is 8 PM.

Dziabo leads Lion men to lopsided win over Panthers
1.31.07
Penn State Altoona out-rebounded Pitt-Bradford 40-17 and shot 56% from the field en route to a 77-56 win over visiting Pitt-Bradford Wednesday evening.  The victory avenged a 75-63 setback for the Lion men back on December 6.  Quintin Dziabo had arguably the best game of his career, pumping in a game high 22 points and yanking 10 boards.  Tyler Franklin scored 18, and five other players scored at least six for Altoona, who improved to 8-12 overall and 6-7 in AMCC play.  With the scored tied 4-4 less than three minutes in, Dziabo scored five points in a decisive 10-0 run that pushed the home team ahead for good.  Bradford cut the deficit to two at the 5:23 mark of the first half, but Mike Dancer made a lay up and a three pointer to increase the lead to nine.  Altoona led 29-20 at the half, and the Panthers would get no closer than nine points the rest of the way.  Altoona steadily increased its advantage and blew the game wide open with a 10-0 run that began with 7:26 to play and lasted just two minutes.  Pitt-Bradford, who was led by Shawn Spindler's 11 points, fell to 11-9 overall and 8-5 in conference play.  The Panthers shot just 41% from the field on the evening and 25% from three point land.  The Lions are back in action Saturday when they travel to Penn State Behrend for a 6:00 PM tip.

Balanced attack helps Lions race past Washington Bible
1.29.07
The Penn State Altoona men's basketball team easily handled visiting Washington Bible College 88-36 Monday evening at the Adler Gymnasium.  All 13 Penn State Altoona players on the roster not only played significant minutes, but registered numbers in the points column.  The Lions started slowly as the game was tied at four just three minutes in.  Tyler Franklin hit two consecutive threes to stretch the lead to 10-6 before the home team began running away with the game.  A 10-0 run midway through the first half followed by a 9-2 run to close the period set the halftime score at 52-18.  Altoona shot 56% in the first, connecting on 18-32 field goals, compared to just eight made baskets by the Cougars.  The Lions outscored Washington Bible 36-18 in the second 20 minutes and out-rebounded the squad 44-20.  Franklin led the way for the victors, who improved to 7-12 overall, by netting 14 points, all in the first half.  Zach Chester came off the Altoona bench to chip in 10 points and grab eight boards.  The Lions did not attempt a three pointer in the second half, but hit 7-8 (88%) from downtown in the opening stanza.  Sean Stewart was also strong underneath, pulling nine boards and scoring four points in 18 minutes of action.  All 13 Lion players played at least 10 minutes in the contest.  The Cougars were led by Paul Yi, who scored 13 points and made two triples.  John Pappas chipped in 10 points in the losing effort.  WBC is a member of the NCCAA, the National Christian College Athletic Association.  Altoona will be tested Wednesday evening when Pitt-Bradford comes to the Adler Gym for an 8 PM tip.

Lake Erie depth, athleticism pushes Storm past Lion men
1.27.07
After trailing just 39-37 at the half and shooting 45% from the field, the Penn State Altoona men were unable to hang with AMCC frontunner Lake Erie, falling 94-66 Saturday at the Adler Gym.  The final score was no indication of the competitive back and forth play, particularly in the first half.  After Darnell Campbell scored the game's opening basket, Altoona used a Colin Geiger three pointer to grab the lead -- one which they would not relinquish until less than five minutes to play in the first stanza.  The second half proved the difference, as Lake Erie used superior athleticism and unlimited depth to gradually stretch the lead to 14 with 10:14 to play.  Jajcen Harris scored a lay up with 6:40 to play, John Dickinson hit two free throws, and Dan Purcell made a lay in to stretch the lead to 24 at the 5:28 mark, putting the game well out of hand.  Despite starting off slow, the Storm shot 55% from the field in the first half and converted 60% of its attempts in the second.  The Lions were a solid 13-29 shooting in the first 20 minutes but hit just 9-32 in the second period.  Altoona put up a valiant effort, led by Tyler Franklin's 16 points and nine rebounds.  Geiger, Mike Dancer, and Chad Beltowski each chipped in 11 for the Lions, who had their four game winning streak snapped.  Lake Erie played ten different players at least 12 minutes in the contest and was led by Derrick Thornton's 20 points.  Darnell Campbell had 18, Howard Washington netted 17, and three other Storm players reached double digits in the win.  LEC outscored the Lions 55-29 in the final 20 minutes.  Altoona is 6-12 overall and 5-7 in AMCC play while LEC is 17-1 overall and a perfect 12-0 in the conference.  The Lions return to action Monday evening for a non-conference game with Washington Bible College at 7 PM in Altoona.

Lion men make history with win over La Roche
1.24.07
The Penn State Altoona men's basketball team earned its fourth consecutive win Wednesday evening and third straight away from home by defeating La Roche College 59-50.  The four game winning streak is the first since Penn State Altoona became a provisional member of the NCAA in 1998.  The Lions also avenged a 48-46 loss to the Redhawks earlier this season at the Adler Gym.  After leading the Lions on Saturday against Hilbert, junior Quintin Dziabo had another strong game against the Redhawks, scoring 16 points and grabbing nine boards.  Tyler Franklin chipped in with 13 points, and nine different Lions scored in the contest.  Altoona led virtually throughout but didn't seal the deal until a late 8-2 run to finish the game.  Mike Dancer and Curt Geiger hit three pointers midway through he first half to cap a decisive 8-0 run that would eventually give the visitors a 36-25 lead at halftime.  La Roche shot just 30% from the field compared to 46% by the Lions.  Redhawk senior standout Stacy Grady was held to just eight points on 2-8 shooting.  The Hawks were led by Zack Kostorick and Ryan Benchwick who each pumped in 12 points.  Altoona made six three pointers in the game while the home team shot just 2-15 from beyond the arc en route to its eighth AMCC loss in 11 tries.  The Lion squad improved to 6-11 overall, 5-6 in AMCC play, and has moved into fifth place in the 10 team conference.  The team's next game will be this Saturday, January 27, against AMCC frontrunner Lake Erie at the Adler Gym.  Men's tip time is 3 PM.

Make it three:  Lion men continue streak with win at Hilbert
1.20.07
Quintin Dziabo scored 21 and grabbed 9 rebounds, Tyler Franklin netted 17, and Mike Dancer scored 17 points in just 12 second half minutes to propel the Penn State Altoona men's basketball team to a 75-73 win over Hilbert College Saturday.  It is the squad's third straight victory after earning wins over Mount Aloysius and Pitt-Greensburg.  Dancer, who did not play a single minute in the first half, went 6-6 in the final period including five treys.  Penn State Altoona is 5-11 overall and 4-6 in AMCC play, propelling itself right back into the playoff hunt with the victory.  Hilbert led 34-28 at the half but was outscored 47-39 in the last 20 minutes to drop to 9-8 overall and 5-5 in conference play.  Altoona continued its hot shooting of late, knocking down 55% of its shots from the field and 77% of its free throw attempts.  The Lions also found an advantage in the three second area, scoring 36 points in the paint compared to 20 by the home team.  Hilbert was led by Glen Ufland, who came off the bench to score 24 points.  Dallas Reinard, who reached the 1,000 point plateau for his career on Wednesday, had 13.  The Lions will try to make it four straight on Wednesday when the team travels to La Roche for an 8 PM tip.  The Redhawks and Lions played an intense battle back on November 29 in Altoona, with the visitors earning a 48-46 win.

Strong second half propels Lion men to second straight win
1.17.07
The Penn State Altoona men's basketball team shot a blazing 71% from the floor in the second half to pick up a critical 88-76 AMCC road win at Pitt-Greensburg Wednesday.  Four players reached double digit scoring, led by Tyler Franklin's 23 points and six rebounds.  After a Zach Spitz jumper to open the game, the Lions were outscored 12-1 over the next five minutes as the home squad staked an early 12-3 lead.  The Bobcat advantage hovered around 10 until a late first half surge by Altoona trimmed Greensburg's lead to 39-36 at intermission.  The decisive run for the visitors began with 16:41 remaining and Pitt-Greensburg up a basket when Colin Geiger nailed a triple, sparking a 12-0 run that gave the Lions a 10 point advantage.  Consecutive lay ups by Quintin Dziabo followed by Franklin and Geiger lay ins upped the lead to 15 with just under four minutes to play.  The Bobcats, who dropped to 2-14 overall and 2-7 in AMCC play, were unable to make a final run, setting the final at 88-76.  Altoona improved to 4-11 overall and 3-6 in AMCC play.  The win, coupled with the squad's 90-81 victory over Mount Aloysius on Monday, is the first two game winning streak since the season ending home stand a year ago when Altoona downed Hilbert and Medaille on consecutive days.  Geiger finished with 20, Dziabo registered 19, and Curtis Geiger scored 11.  For Pitt-Greensburg, Rashad Davison had 18 points and Matt Rowland chipped in 15.  Altoona committed just 14 turnovers and made 23 foul shots compared to nine makes by Greensburg.  The squad hits the road on Saturday for a game at Hilbert, who the Lions downed 73-53 on December 2 to claim its first win of the year.  Tip off is set for 4 PM.

Four players hit double figures as Lion men roll past Mounties
1.15.07
Tyler Franklin scored 26 points, and the supporting cast was exceptional as the Lion men's basketball team downed local rival Mount Aloysius Monday night at the Adler Gym.  Curtis Geiger (14 points), Chad Beltowski (13 points, 6 rebounds), and Colin Geiger (12 points) rounded out the double digit scoring for Altoona, who improved to 3-11 overall and 2-6 in AMCC play.  Mount Aloysius fell to 3-9, 1-7 in the conference.  Altoona led most of the first half and used a Franklin jumper with eight seconds to play to bolt to a 10 point halftime advantage (39-29).  After two quick field goals to start the second half, the Lions spent the rest of the contest trying to hold off the Mountie charge, led by all-AMCC performer Roman Mims.  The senior hit two threes and a lay up during a 12-0 run that spanned four minutes and cut the Mountie deficit to just two.  Mims drained another three of his game high 41 points at the 13:06 mark to turn the tide and give Mount Aloysius a four point lead.  But the resilient Lions, in front of a jammed gymnasium, answered with a 12-2 run to take the lead which they would not surrender.  Two free throws by Edgar Sampson with 1:20 remaining trimmed the Lion lead to three at 84-81.  Altoona would score the last six points, all on free throws, to set the final.  The Mounties were just 8-30 from three point land in the game and only 3-17 in the first half.  Only one other Mount Aloysius player, Sam Hanik, hit double figures (10 points).  Altoona shot a blazing 56% from the field on the evening and handed out 17 total assists compared to the Mounties eight.  The Lions will try to continue their winning ways on Wednesday at Pitt-Greensburg.  Game time is 8 PM.

Buzzer beater lifts Medaille past Lion men
1.13.07
Medaille's Bill Gersitz drilled the game winning jumper with no time remaining to give the Medaille men's basketball team a 57-55 win over visiting Penn State Altoona Saturday in Buffalo.  It was Medaille's first AMCC win of the season in seven tries.  Lion reserve Lenny Castor drilled a three pointer with 1:04 left in the game to give Altoona a 55-53 lead.  After Medaille's James McNeil missed a jumper with 43 seconds to play, Mavs guard Keith Hack grabbed the offensive rebound and was fouled.  He made both freebees before Altoona called a timeout with the game tied at 55 and just 37 ticks left on the clock.  But a costly turnover with just 10 seconds left on the clock set up Gersitz' heroic shot, propelling the Mavs to their 5th win of the year.  Altoona dropped to 2-11 overall and 1-6 in AMCC play.  The Lions had to overcome a seven point deficit late after leading much of the contest.  Colin Geiger fronted Altoona with 13 points on the afternoon while Medaille was led by all-AMCC performer James McNeil who netted 16.  The Lions, who have a plethora of solid three point shooters, connected on just 3-22 treys on the day en route to the loss.  Medaille got to the free throw line 26 times (made 22) compared to just 11 attempts by the visitors.  Altoona led by seven at two different points in the first half before the home team took its first lead of the game with six minutes left in the first period.  The Lions must bounce back quickly and prepare for local AMCC rival Mount Aloysius on Monday, January 15.  Tip time is 8 PM at the Adler Gymnasium.

Second half run pushes Bobcats past Lion men
1.10.07
A 23-2 run to open the second half stifled the Penn State Altoona men's basketball team Wednesday evening, as Frostburg State hung on for a 73-65 win over the visiting Lions.  The two squads exchanged leads throughout the first half, and Altoona eventually would stake a three point lead at the intermission via two Chad Beltowski free throws.  The Lions connected on 6-11 first half three point attempts and shot 46% from the field in the period.  But the first seven minutes of the second half proved the difference, as the Bobcats made seemingly every shot they attempted while the Lions cooled off considerably.  Frostburg's Keith Hazel scored nine points in the decisive 23-2 run that gave the home team a 56-38 advantage with 13:18 to play.  Altoona trailed by 16 (68-52) with just 4:39 to play before a 10-0 run highlighted by two Mike Dancer triples cut the deficit to six with 1:49 left.  Lorenzo Carter converted a lay up with 34 ticks on the clock to close the gap to 69-65 before two Hazel free throws followed by two Dale DeBerry freebees set the final.  Hazel (17 points, 5 rebounds) and DeBerry (16 points, 4 steals) led the Bobcats, who improved to 6-7 overall and 5-1 in AMCC play.  Ten different Altoona players reached the scoring column, but only Tyler Franklin (11 points) hit for double digits.  Dancer and Carter each tallied nine while Colin Geiger and Quintin Dziabo chipped in eight a piece.  The Lions, who shot 15-19 from the charity stripe, fell to 2-10 overall and 1-5 in conference play.  The squad returns to action on Saturday as they travel to Medaille College for a 3 PM tip.

Penn State Behrend shot 50% from the field and used a late 8-0 run in the first half to pull away from Penn State Altoona and grab the 65-56 win Saturday afternoon in Altoona.  The Lions of Altoona hung right with one of the top squads in the AMCC for much of the first half before the 2005-2006 conference Player of the Year took over.  Behrend forward Kevin Buczynski scored four of the squad's eight points during the critical 8-0 run that gave Behrend a decisive 29-20 lead with minutes left in the half.  With the halftime score 31-22 in favor of the visitors, Altoona cut the lead to six (34-28) with 16:30 to play on a Tyler Franklin free throw.  After a Behrend surge, the home team cut the deficit to just four with less than seven minutes remaining.  But the Behrend Lions would outscore Altoona 19-12 over the remaining 6:33 to capture the hard fought victory.  Buczynski was excellent in the winning effort, scoring 19 points and grabbing nine boards.  David Gahan and Justin Kovac each chipped in 10 for Penn State Behrend, which played all 15 players on its roster.  Penn State Altoona was fronted by Franklin's 16 points and five assists, and Curt Geiger came off the bench to hit three triples in the loss.  The Lions of Altoona made eight three pointers compared to just two by the visiting Lions, but Behrend attempted 35 free throws (made 21) compared to 10-14 shooting by Altoona.  Penn State Altoona has only once defeated the Lions of Behrend with the 52-50 win coming last year at the Adler Gym.  The Lions return to action on Wednesday, January 10, as they travel to Frostburg State for an 8 PM tip.

Lion men fall at Heidelberg
12.30.06
The Penn State Altoona men's basketball team fell to 2-8 overall after dropping a 68-46 non-league decision at Heidelberg College (OH) Saturday evening.  Quintin Dziabo fronted the Lions with 17 points and grabbed a team-high eight rebounds in the losing effort.  Penn State Altoona held a 6-2 lead at the 14:27 mark of the first half before a 7-0 Heidelberg run gave the hosts a lead they would not relinquish.  Altoona trailed 34-24 at the break and got as close as seven with 13 minutes remaining in the contest.  But the Fighting Student Princes used a 17-5 run to break the game open and pull away for good as the squad improved to 7-4 overall.  Heidelberg, who got to the free throw line 20 times on the night compared to Altoona's five, was led by Brian Schmidt's 13 points and 9 rebounds.  The Student Princes' bench outscored the Lion bench 34-19, and the squad converted 19 points on 20 Altoona turnovers.  Four different Heidelberg players scored at least 12 points in the contest.  The two squads met last year at the Adler Gym with the Fighting Student Princes winning 93-77.  Curtis Geiger came off the Lion bench to chip in nine points on 4-6 shooting.  Altoona returns to action on January 6 as Penn State Behrend comes to the Adler Gym for a 4:00 PM tip.  The contest is preceded by the women's game against Behrend at 2:00 PM.

Lion men win first ever game over ranked team, topple Lincoln University
12.14.06
This was one you simply had to see to believe.  Undoubtedly the biggest win in Penn State Altoona athletics history, the Lion men's basketball team downed 18th ranked Lincoln University 95-86 at the Adler Gymnasium in front of a raucous crowd Thursday evening.  It marked the first time in school history that the men's basketball defeated a nationally ranked program.  After jumping out to a 7-2 lead, the Lions exchanged buckets with the visiting Lincoln Lions and found themselves down 16-15 at the 11:21 mark of the first half.  Altoona would never trail again, outscoring Lincoln 30-15 the remainder of the period to stake a commanding 45-31 advantage at the break.  Lion senior guard Tyler Franklin was superb in the first 20 minutes, as he netted 19 of his game-high 29 points to blow the contest open.  He also grabbed eight rebounds and handed out three assist.  The Lions placed three more players in double figures, as Colin Geiger scored 21, Quintin Dziabo chipped in 17, and Mike Dancer had 13 for 2-7 Altoona.  Lincoln had difficulty shooting from the field, connecting on just 32 of its 85 field goal attempts on the evening.  Senior standout Sami Wiley, who scored 69 points in the squad's 201-78 win over Ohio State Marion, was held to just 10 on 2-15 shooting.  Ja'Juan Robinson led the Lincoln Lions with 24 points and Keyon Johnson added 15.  Penn State Altoona was ahead by 15 points with 1:40 to play in the game before Lincoln put a brief scare into the Lion faithful, using an 11-2 run to get as close as five with 21 seconds to play.  But a pair of free throws by Quintin Dziabo and a subsequent pair by Mike Dancer set the final score, as the Lion students rushed the court in celebration.  Lincoln, which shot 1-19 from three point land in the second half and 3-28 on the game, dropped its second straight decision to fall to 5-3 overall.  The physical play escalated throughout as the two teams combined to commit 51 fouls and shoot 67 free throws.  Altoona is off for finals week before traveling to Heidelberg College on December 30 for a 5:30 PM tip.

Bethany three point shooting sinks men's basketball
12.11.06
The weather outside the Adler Gymnasium Monday evening may have been chilly, but the Bethany three point shooting inside was blazing.  Penn State Altoona got behind early and fell to the visiting Bison 86-64 to drop to 1-7 overall.  Bethany made its first seven three pointers, five of which occurred in the opening 10 minutes, helping the Bison bolt to a 24-4 advantage before a stunned Altoona crowd.  The outcome was drastically different than the two teams' first meeting, a 91-87 double overtime thriller won by Bethany on November 17. The Lions had difficulty finding the net in the first half, shooting just 7 of 22, and found themselves down 41-22 at the break.  The Bison were unrelenting, connecting on 60% of its shots for the game including 52% from three point land.  Lion standout Tyler Franklin was held scoreless in the first half and finished the game with eight points.  Quintin Dziabo fronted the Altoona attack, netting 18 points on 7 of 12 shooting.  He was the only player in double digits for Altoona, who trailed by as many as 30 in the second half.  The Bethany players shared the basketball well, evidenced by the squad's 22 assists on the evening.  The Bison played 10 players at least 12 minutes on the night and got well-rounded contributions, led by Brody Jackson's 19 points.  Ryan Besancon chipped in with 14 and four other players scored seven or more for 6-3 Bethany.  The tough schedule gets even tougher for the Lions as the nation's 10th ranked squad Lincoln University comes to the Adler Gym on Thursday evening for a 7:00 PM tip.

Storm too much for Lion men
12.9.06
The Penn State Altoona men's basketball team dropped its second straight contest, an 86-68 defeat at Lake Erie College Saturday afternoon.  Despite 18 points a piece from Tyler Franklin and Colin Geiger, the Lions made just 19 field goals in the game compared to 32 good Storm buckets.  Lake Erie showed why it has reigned supreme in the AMCC, using a 13-2 run at the outset to stake a commanding early lead.  The advantage slowly increased throughout the half as the Lions trailed by 19 points at intermission (47-28).  The gritty Altoona squad battled to get the deficit back to 11 on a Franklin three pointer with 7:54 to play, but a 7-0 Storm run followed to seal the victory.  Altoona committed 22 turnovers in the game and went just 8 of 17 from the field in the first half.  Lake Erie made 17 field goals in the first half and shot 53% on the afternoon.  Quintin Dziabo was the third Lion in double digits, scoring 10 points and grabbing eight boards.  Lake Erie placed four players in double figures led by Darnell Campbell's 18.  Altoona was an impressive 23-28 from the free throw line for 82%.  The Storm ran their record to 7-1 and a perfect 4-0 in conference play while the Lions fell to 1-6 overall and 1-3 in the AMCC.  The men have two more contests before the holiday break, both at the Adler Gymnasium beginning Monday when Bethany (WV) comes to town for a 7:00 PM tip.  The two teams met in the opener of the Juniata Tip-Off Tournament with Bethany prevailing 91-87 in double overtime.

Men's basketball stifled at Bradford
12.6.06
It was deja vu all over again for the Penn State Altoona men's basketball team, as similar to last year's contest, the Lions fell behind early and never recovered, dropping a 75-63 decision at Pitt Bradford Wednesday evening.  Panther guard Dan Thomas led the charge from the opening tip, scoring five of the team's first seven points before Altoona could get on the scoreboard.  After Tyler Franklin's jumper cut the Altoona deficit to six midway through he first half, Thomas and teammate Jon Hannon fronted a 9-0 run that gave the home team a 30-15 advantage.  Trailing 44-28 at halftime, the Lions rallied to within seven after a Len Castor lay up at the 12:23 mark.  But a subsequent 13-4 run by Bradford finally put the game out of reach as Altoona fell to 1-5 overall and 1-2 in AMCC play.  Bradford remained perfect in conference play, improving to 3-0.  Tyler Franklin recorded his second 30 point game in as many outings, shooting an astounding 12 of 14 from the field.  He was a perfect 3-3 from behind the arc and also recorded seven rebounds in the losing effort.  He was joined in double digits by Quintin Dziabo, who tallied 12 points.  Pitt-Bradford used a crop of experienced veterans to put away the Lions, led by Hannon's 21 points.  Shawn Spindler (19 points, seven rebounds), Dan Thomas (15 points, three assists), and Aaron Stang (10 points) aided the Panther attack.  The Lions did hold all-AMCC standout Ryan Race to just four points on the evening.  Altoona is back in action on Saturday as the team travels to Lake Erie College for a 3:00 PM tip.

Franklin leads Lions to first win of season
12.2.06
The saying "big time players step up in big time games" could not have been any truer Saturday afternoon, as senior guard Tyler Franklin led the Lion men's basketball team to a 73-53 drumming of Hilbert for the squad's first win of the season.  After an off shooting night against La Roche on Wednesday, Franklin and the Lions came out with a vengeance against one of the top teams in the AMCC.  The Altoona native netted 30 points, grabbed 11 rebounds, tallied three steals, and added one block on a breakaway lay up attempt that swung the momentum the Lions way.  The victors shot a blazing 44% from the field and 40% from three point range.  Hilbert was cold all afternoon, connecting on only 29% of its shots despite staking an early lead.  After two Corey Vander Sluis free throws gave the Hawks a 22-16 lead with 5:31 to play in the first half, Altoona ended the first period on a 13-2 run to extend the lead to 29-24.  Franklin was instrumental in that surge, scoring nine of the 13 points.  The second half featured a more confident Lion bunch against a Hilbert squad who became increasingly frustrated.  Less than six minutes into the second half, the lead was up to 17, and Altoona would never look back from there.  Quintin Dziabo chipped in 14 points and six rebounds while Colin Geiger added 11 points.  Hilbert's two star players, guard Dallas Reinard and forward Corey Vander Sluis, were held in check the entire day, working for every point they got.  Reinard finished with 22 and Vander Sluis ended with 14 for a Hawks squad that fell to 2-3 overall and 0-2 in AMCC play.  Altoona earned its first win on the young season and improved to 1-4 overall.  More importantly, the squad is 1-1 in AMCC play and will embark on a two game road trip beginning Wednesday, December 6, at Pitt-Bradford.  Tip time is 8:00 PM

Men's Basketball drops heartbreaker to La Roche
11.29.06
The season's first win was "oh so close" for the Penn State Altoona men's basketball team Wednesday night, but in heart wrenching fashion, the Lions were downed by La Roche 48-46 in front of a jammed Adler Gymnasium.  After a pair of Quintin Dziabo free throws with 48 seconds to play gave Altoona the two point edge, La Roche senior guard Stacy Grady elevated in the lane and bounced home the tying jumper with 27 seconds left.  The Lions tried to hold for the game's last shot but committed a crucial turnover with 10 ticks to play.  After a timeout, Grady was fouled on his way to the hole with three seconds left.  He knocked both down freebees and Altoona never got a shot off as the Lions fell to 0-4 overall and 0-1 in AMCC play.  Altoona never trailed in the first half and used a Zach Spitz lay up to extend the lead to as many as seven.  But the Hawks rallied back and sent the game to halftime tied at 27.  La Roche would not hold an advantage until a good Dylan Grazier three pointer made the score 36-35 Hawks.  After being held in check much of the first half, Grady took over in the final 20 minutes, primarily down the stretch to help La Roche improve to 2-3 overall and 1-0 in the AMCC.  After shooting a blazing 57% in the first half, the Altoona well went dry as the Lions connected on just 6 of 20 second half field goals.  Tyler Franklin led the Lion attack with 12 points and Dziabo chipped in with 11 tallies and five rebounds.  Grady was the only Redhawk in double digits with 17.  Altoona returns to action on Saturday, December 2, for a 4:00 PM game with Hilbert College at the Adler Gym.

Franklin breaks scoring record in setback to Grove City
11.21.06
Despite 26 points from newly-crowned Penn State Altoona men's basketball all-time scoring leader Tyler Franklin, the Lions of Altoona fell on the road to Grove City Tuesday night 69-59.  The senior guard drilled a three pointer at the 15:11 mark of the first half to surpass former Lion standout Josh Baker on the all-time career scoring list.  To date, Franklin has 1,127 points and needed only three entering Tuesday's contest to claim sole possession of the record.  Meanwhile, the Wolverines were looking to avenge last year's 69-64 loss to the Lions in Altoona.  Grove City used a 7-0 run to open the contest, a spurt from which the Lions would not recover.  The Wolverines led by as many as 14 in the first half but a battling Lion unit would score the last four points to trail by only seven (31-24) at the break.  Grove City used a Shawn Carr three pointer and two straight lay ups to increase the second half advantage to 12, which is where the Lion deficit hovered the rest of the way.  Altoona committed 23 turnovers in the game and placed just one player (Franklin) in double digits.  Barry Minemyer was the second leading scorer for Altoona with nine.  Grove City featured a balanced attack led by Ryan Gibson's 17 points, including four three-pointers.  Joe Capotosta netted 14, Shawn Carr scored 12, and Mark Smith came off the bench to contribute 10 points and four rebounds.  Once the Wolverines established the early lead, it was a struggle for Altoona to make up ground as the squad never got within seven points after the 13:58 mark of the first half.  Altoona drops to 0-3 and will return from Thanksgiving break to open AMCC play against La Roche on November 29 at the Adler Gym.  Tip time is 8:00 PM.  Grove City picked up its first win of the season to improve to 1-2.

Men's Basketball falls to Franciscan
11.18.06
After a physically and emotionally draining double-overtime loss to Bethany College on Friday evening, the Lions were unable to bounce back in the consolation game, falling to Franciscan College 76-65 Saturday afternoon in the Doc Greene Tip-Off Tournament hosted by Juniata College.  The Lions jumped out to a quick start and held a six point lead at the 15:47 mark of the first half.  But after a Curtis Allen three-pointer gave the lead to Franciscan with 12 minutes to play in the half, the Barons would never trail again in the contest.  Franciscan held a 31-23 halftime advantage by shooting 40% from the field and connecting on eight of nine free throws.  At one point midway through the second half, Altoona found itself down by 20 points to a hungry Baron squad that was blown out by Juniata the night before.  But to the Lions' credit, the squad bounced back and trimmed the lead to just four on a Tyler Franklin lay up with 2:28 to play.  But it was too little, too late as Altoona dropped to 0-2 on the season.  Senior guard Tyler Franklin bounced back from an off night on Friday to pour in a team-high 25 points on 8 of 19 shooting.  The Altoona native is now just three points from breaking the Penn State Altoona all-time scoring record currently held by Josh Baker.  Junior Colin Geiger was the only other Lion in double digits with 11.  Franciscan was led by Matt Glassman's 26 points and seven rebounds.  Also chipping in for the Barons were Curtis Allen (17 points), Kevin Allen, (13 points, 6 rebounds), and Nathan Stanton (11 points, seven rebounds).  Perhaps the storyline of the game evolved from the charity stripe as the Lions were out shot 42-14.  Next up for Altoona is a trip to Grove City on Tuesday, November 21, at 7:00 PM.  The Lions defeated Grove City last year in Altoona 69-64.

Men's Basketball drops double overtime thriller to Bethany
11.17.06
After trading blows for 40 minutes of regulation and two five-minute overtime periods, it was the Bison of Bethany College who outlasted Penn State Altoona 91-87 Friday night in the first round of the Doc Greene Tip-off Tournament hosted by Juniata College.  In a back and forth first half, the Lions held a six point lead less than five minutes into the contest.  The Bison battled back and led by eight with 10:54 remaining in the first before Altoona clawed away and eventually took a seven point advantage at halftime.  Bethany began the second half on a mission and eventually grabbed the lead on a Marcus Adams lay up at the 9:03 mark.  With just 28 seconds to play in regulation and the Bison clinging to a two point lead, Doug Grissinger found Quintin Dziabo for the lay in that sent the game to overtime.   Altoona led by as many as five in the first OT before the Bison cut into the deficit in a big way.  An old fashioned three point play by Bethany guard Chris Stephens followed up by Ryan Besancon's triple gave Bethany the one point overtime advantage with 1:19 to go.  After the Bison extended the lead to two, Altoona's Colin Geiger nailed a pair of huge free throws with 29 ticks to play sending the game to double overtime.  After exchanging baskets, Bethany grabbed the lead and used six straight free throws down the stretch to seal the victory and improve to 1-0 on the young season.  The Lions placed four players in double figures, led by Geiger's game-high 22 points on seven field goals and six free throws.  Freshman Zach Spitz (19 points, 5 assists), sophomore Doug Grissinger (16 points), and junior Quintin Dziabo (14 points, 12 rebounds) led a balanced Altoona attack.  Bethany placed five men in double figures led by James Wallace and Chris Stevens with 16 points a piece.  While free throw shooting was virtually even, the Bison were a perfect 8 for 8 in the overtimes and made five more three pointers than Altoona.  The Lions will compete in Saturday's Consolation game slated to begin at 2:00 PM against the loser of Franciscan and Juniata.  Altoona is 0-1 on the season and following Saturday's consolation game will be back in action on Tuesday, November 21, as they travel to Grove City.

Men's Basketball excited for 2006-2007 campaign  (SEASON PREVIEW)
11.14.06
The Penn State Altoona men's basketball team is gearing up for what promises to be an exciting 2006-2007 campaign.  The squad returns eight players from last year's 7-18 team and adds 11 talented newcomers with the hope of a return visit to the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference playoffs, an accomplishment that last happened in 2002.  Second year head coach Alan Seretti asserts that success will not come without the core principles of hard work, desire, team unity, and sacrifice.  "Our goal every season is to be excellent at whatever we attempt to do each day," noted Seretti, whose squad finished ninth in the ten-team AMCC a season ago.  "The expectation is that we will achieve excellence by carrying ourselves with great respect, competing for everything, and always doing it together."  (Read More)
