(ALTOONA, PA:) After trailing 33-31 at halftime, Grove
City outscored Penn State Altoona 44-33 in the second period to secure a 75-66
victory over the Lions Tuesday night at the Adler Gym. The Wolverines
improved to 2-1 on the season while Altoona dropped its second straight game and
fell to 1-2.
A decisive 13-1 run by Grove City in the closing minutes of the
game gave the visitors a 66-57 advantage with under three minutes to play.
Free throw shooting also factored heavily into the outcome as Grove City
connected on 29-37 attempts (78.4%) compared to 15-24 (62.5%) shooting by the
Lions. Altoona actually made three more field goals (22-19) than Grove
City.
The Lions overcame a 25-17 deficit with 5:44 left in the opening
half to claim a 33-31 lead at intermission. Senior Mike Dancer
(Montgomeryville, PA/North Penn) was fouled on a three point attempt as the
buzzer sounded and connected on one of three foul shots to set the halftime
score.
Senior forward Quintin Dziabo (Cresson, PA/Penn Cambria) was one
of three Altoona players who reached double figures. Dziabo tallied 14
points and grabbed five rebounds while Dancer and sophomore Zach Spitz
(Harrisburg, PA/Susquehanna Township) each netted 10. Spitz finished with
a game high seven assists.
Wolverine guard Shawn Carr scored 13 of his game high 21 points
in the second half and finished the night with five triples. Teammate Ryan
Gibson chipped in 14 points and dished out four assists.
The Penn State Altoona bench outscored the Wolverine reserves
37-16. The lead changed hands six times throughout the game before Grove
City grabbed it for good via a Carr trey with 6:03 remaining.
Grove City turned 14 Lion turnovers into 19 points and
out-rebounded Penn State Altoona 32-21.
Altoona returns to action this Sunday, November 25, for another
rugged non-conference game against the Lions of Albright College. Tip time
is set for 3:00 PM at the Adler Gym.
