PENN STATE ALTOONA MEN CAPTURE SECOND STRAIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP
9.10.06

GAME 1:       Marietta College        7              Thiel College       1

ALTOONA, PA:  Marietta College bounced back nicely from their first round defeat to Albright College with a 7-1 victory over Thiel College in Sunday's consolation game.  Marietta improved to 1-3 on the season while Thiel fell to 1-4 overall.

Thiel scored the first goal of the contest only 28 seconds in, when Dorran Coley went unassisted to give the Tomcats a 1-0 lead.  Marietta scored the next seven goals, however, including two by Joel Nau and two by Kyle Muth.  Kyle Blankenship, Matt Sleyzak, and Felix Ntow netted the other three Pioneer goals.

Marietta outshot the Tomcats 27-5 in the contest and allowed only three shots on goal.  Muth also had an assist on the afternoon while teammate Mike Sanchez passed out two assists.  Overall, ten different Pioneer players scored points in the blowout.

Marietta College won the inaugural 2004 Penn State Altoona Fall Invitational, while their women's squad has captured all three championships in the tournament's three year existence.

GAME 2:       Penn State Altoona       0          Albright College       0            (Altoona wins 4-1 in shootout)

ALTOONA, PA:  A defensive battle with both teams having chances to win was the best way to describe the men's championship of the 2006 Penn State Altoona Fall Invitational.  After 110 minutes of action, the outcome came down to a shootout, which Penn State Altoona won 4-1 to take the title.

Both goalies were phenomenal as Albright's Joe Hartman recorded eight saves while Penn State Altoona freshman Jon Martin recorded three very big saves.  The Lions of Altoona out-shot Albright 20-9 on the evening, but were unable to find the net.  Nor was Albright, as both teams seemed to hit every post and cross bar without touching net.

In the shootout, Altoona's Dan Saxton and Brock Heller pounded home goals before Albright's Tom Talarico made it a 2-1 Penn State Altoona advantage.  But Bryan Pierzga scored, Jon Martin made a huge stop for Altoona, and freshman Tim Morris ended any doubt as the Lions cruised to their second straight championship in the Fall Invitational.

The game officially counted as a tie, making Altoona's record 1-1-2 overall.  The squad returns to action this Tuesday, September 12, as Penn State Berks comes to Spring Run Stadium.  Game time is at 7:00 PM.
