GUTHRIDGE LEADS LIONS TO WIN OVER BERKS
9.12.06

ALTOONA, PA:  After a slow start to the contest, Penn State Altoona turned on the burners, scoring two first half and two second half goals en route to a 4-0 victory over Penn State Berks on Tuesday at Spring Run Stadium.

The catalyst for Altoona was junior captain Josh Guthridge (Wayne, PA / Conestoga), who had six points on the evening.  He scored the first goal of the game at the 20 minute mark off a Tim Morris (Altoona, PA / Altoona) pass in front of the goal.  Later, he assisted Bryan Pierzga (State College, PA / State College) for a first half goal with two seconds remaining before assisting Tim Morris on a corner kick at the 55 minute mark in the second half.  Guthridge scored the last Lion goal of the game after taking a beautiful pass from Brock Heller (Canton, PA / Troy).

The Lions of Berks never really threatened to score in the contest, taking eleven shots but sending only three of them at the Altoona goalie.  The highlight play of the night may have come at the end of the first half, when Lion goalie Jim Rosato (Downingtonw, PA / Downingtown West) passed to Guthridge who passed to Bryan Pierzga for a goal with two seconds to play.  The rare "double assist" was awarded to both Guthridge and Rosato.

Berks fell to 1-1 on the season while Altoona improved to 2-1-2 overall.  The Lions have a tough test on Thursday as Waynesburg comes to Spring Run Stadium.  Game time is 7:00 pm.
