LIONS HAND CARNEGIE MELLON FIRST LOSS OF YEAR
9.19.06

ALTOONA, PA:  The Penn State Altoona men's soccer team took down nationally ranked Carnegie Mellon University 2-1 Tuesday night at Spring Run Stadium in front of raucous crowd.

The Tartans, who were ranked ninth in the nation by D3kicks.com and thirteenth by the NSCAA, maintained a 1-0 lead through 65 minutes of action.  That's when the Lions turned the tables, as Tim Morris fed Corey Suter for the game-tying goal at the 66:03 mark giving Altoona new life.  With victory in reach, the Lions' Justin Brunt drilled a corner kick that ricocheted off a Tartan defender before bouncing in.  That proved to be the game winner, as a combination of outstanding defense and solid goalkeeper play propelled the Lions.

Statistically, the game was nearly even as Carnegie Mellon outshot the Lions 12-11 but Altoona had more shots on goal.  CMU goalkeeper Matthew Bazin had five spectacular saves on the evening while Lion freshman Jon Martin came up with three big saves of his own.  The only Tartan score came when Sean Filipovitz fed William Schlough for the header at the 43:31 mark.

The Lions improved to 4-1-2 on the season while Carnegie Mellon fell to 5-1 overall.  Altoona travels to Hilbert this Saturday, September 23, for a 3:00 PM game against the Hawks.
