PIERZGA PENALTY KICK GIVES LIONS 1-0 WIN
9.14.06

ALTOONA, PA:  After playing more than 88 scoreless minutes Thursday night, Penn State Altoona finally capitalized on a Waynesburg foul and escaped with a 1-0 victory.

With less than two minutes to play in regulation, all eyes at Spring Run Stadium were on Penn State Altoona forward Bryan Pierzga (State College, PA / State College).  The lightning-fast junior raced downfield with the ball and made a variety of moves before being fouled inside the box, leading to a penalty kick.  Pierzga drilled the PK with 1:11 remaining to give Altoona the hard-fought win.

Penn State Altoona had 29 shots on the evening compared to Waynesburg's 11.  Only eight of the Lion shots were on goal, and forward Corey Suter (Mifflintown, PA / Juniata) almost out-shot the whole Waynesburg squad, pounding out nine attempts.  Waynesburg goalkeeper Brad Davis had seven saves on the night.

The Lions improved to 3-1-2 on the season and have two very tough tests coming up within the week.  On Saturday, Altoona travels to perennial power Elizabethtown before hosting Carnegie Mellon at Spring Run Stadium on Tuesday, September 19.  The CMU game will start at 7:00 pm and will be preceded by a women's soccer contest against Shenandoah at 4:30 pm.
