(HUNTINGDON, PA:) Juniata College combined for 29 hits
over two games en route to a doubleheader sweep of visiting Penn State Altoona
Tuesday afternoon. The Lady Eagles blanked the Lions 9-0 in the opener,
then got five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to notch an 11-4 game two
victory. Juniata upped its record to 8-7 overall while Altoona fell to 3-9
on the season.
In game one, the hosts jumped on Lion starter Emily Cummins
(Spring Mills, PA/Penns Valley) in the first inning, banging out seven hits and
scoring eight runs to stake an early 8-0 lead. Altoona managed just one
base hit off of Juniata starter Alyssa Erb, who struck out five and walked only
one.
Freshman third baseman Nicolette Stimely (Lewistown,
PA/Lewistown) had the lone single for the Lions. Cummins allowed just
three hits and one run in her final three innings of work before the game was
called after the fifth inning. Sara Eckard and Liz Schmitt belted three
hits apiece for the Lady Eagles, and Schmitt was one of three players to finish
with two RBI.
The Lady Eagles got one run in the first and three more in the
second to grab a 4-0 lead in game two. Stimely put Altoona on the
scoreboard in the third with a two-run home run to center field that sliced the
deficit to 4-2.
Juniata answered in the bottom of the frame with two scores of
their own thanks to extra base hits by Schmitt and Rachel Nagy. The Lady
Eagles banged out a total of 17 hits in the game, all coming off Lion starter
Lindsey Laudermilch (Hershey, PA/Hershey). Laudermilch hurled all six
innings, surrendering 11 runs (eight earned) and fanning two.
Freshman Megan Turiano (Tyrone, PA/Tyrone) drilled an RBI double
and scored on a Melissa Claver (State College, PA/State College) RBI single in
the fifth to make it 6-4. But Juniata exploded for five insurance runs in
the bottom of the sixth to eventually set the final.
Claver finished 4-4 at the plate as the Lions recorded 10 hits
in the game. Juniata starter Pam Mansell went 4 and 2/3 innings to get the
win. Erb pitched the final 2 and 1/3 innings, allowing three hits but no
runs.
Penn State Altoona returns to action on Wednesday as it opens
Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference play at Pitt-Greensburg. The
doubleheader is slated to begin at 3:00 PM.
