(ALTOONA, PA:) Penn State Altoona dropped a heartbreaking
6-3 decision to Frostburg State in eight innings Tuesday afternoon at the
Ivyside Field. The squads made it through 1 and 1/2 innings of game two
before rain wiped out the second contest, which has yet to be rescheduled.
The Lions fell to 3-12 overall and 0-3 in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate
Conference.
Frostburg led 2-0 until the Lions picked up three runs in the
bottom of the fifth. With the bases loaded, freshman Nicolette Stimely
(Lewistown, PA/Lewistown) hit a grounder to the second baseman. The throw
home was errant and two runs scored. Two batters later, a wild pitch
allowed sophomore Kara Myers (Millheim, PA/Penns Valley) to score to give
Altoona a 3-2 lead.
An error in the top of the sixth by the Lions allowed Frostburg
to even the score at 3-3. With two outs and Bobcat runner Brooke Tapman on
second base, Tapman tried to steal third, and Myers pick off throw skipped past
shortstop Megan Turiano (Tyrone, PA/Tyrone) into left field, giving the Bobcats
the tying run.
In the eighth inning, the Bobcats had the bases loaded with two
outs. A dropped foul ball allowed the inning to continue, and Frostburg's
Lindsey Seal walked to bring in the go ahead run. The next hitter, Meghan
Dabkowski, cracked a two-run RBI single to give the visitors a comfortable 6-3
lead.
Altoona was unable to muster any offense in its half of the
eighth, hitting two groundouts and a pop out to conclude the game.
Freshman Callie Lyle (Brockway, PA/Brockway) was 2-2 with a triple and run
scored.
Bobcat starting pitcher Kelly Callan worked 4 and 1/3 innings
before being pulled in favor of Kately Coffey. Coffey threw the final 3
and 2/3 innings of scoreless softball, not surrendering a single hit while
walking three and fanning four.
Lion sophomore Emily Cummins (Spring Mills, PA/Penns Valley)
pitched a gem in defeat, hurling all eight innings and allowing six runs, two
earned, and only six hits. Cummins walked three and recorded a season-high
11 strikeouts.
Game two was halted after 1 and 1/2 innings with the score 0-0.
A makeup date has yet to be announced.
Penn State Altoona returns to action for a non-conference
doubleheader at Mount Aloysius on Thursday. First pitch in Cresson is
scheduled for 3:00 PM.
