(PITTSBURGH, PA:) Penn State Altoona snapped its 11-game
losing skid and picked up its first Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference win
of the season at La Roche Tuesday afternoon. The Lions won game one of the
twin bill 4-0 behind a stellar pitching performance from Emily Cummins (Spring
Mills, PA/Penns Valley) but dropped the nightcap 8-5 after falling behind early.
Altoona is now 4-19 overall and 1-8 in the AMCC while La Roche is 11-19 and 6-8
in the league.
Cummins fired a complete game, four-hit shutout in the opener,
striking out seven Redhawk batters and walking three.
Freshman Nicolette Stimely (Lewistown, PA/Lewistown) played the
best doubleheader of her young career and went 2-3 in game one with an RBI.
The Lions picked up one run in the top of the first when Kara
Myers (Millheim, PA/Penns Valley) reached on an error and scored on a Stimely
triple. La Roche committed a pair of errors in the third inning that
helped the visitors plate two more runs. Cummins reached on an error to
leadoff the frame, and after a Callie Lyle (Brockway, PA/Brockway) double,
scored on a Kate Markstein (Crown Point, IN/Crown Point) RBI groundout.
Lyle then crossed home plate when Myers singled her in a batter
later. The final Altoona run came in the sixth inning and was again scored
by Markstein. She led off the inning with a single, stole second, and
eventually reached home on a Megan Turiano (Tyrone, PA/Tyrone) RBI groundout.
In game two, Lyle started on the mound for the Lions but gave up
six runs on five hits through two innings before being pulled. The 6-1
cushion was enough for the Redhawks, which tacked on two more runs in the bottom
of the fourth to extend the advantage to 8-1.
Altoona battled back to plate three in the fifth inning,
cracking three hits and getting a pair of run-scoring singles from Stimely and
Turiano. The Lions left nine runners on base in the game and banged out
three hits in the seventh inning, managing only one run.
Stimely went 4-4 at the plate in game two, scoring two runs and
driving in two more. Lyle had three of the squad's 11 total hits.
La Roche finished with nine hits and a complete game win from
pitcher Melissa Wolff, who walked just one batter on the day. Lion
reliever Lindsey Laudermilch (Hershey, PA/Hershey) pitched the final four
innings in defeat, allowing four hits and two earned runs.
Penn State Altoona is back in action this Saturday, April 19,
for an AMCC twin bill against Lake Erie. First pitch at the Ivyside
Athletic Field is scheduled for 1:00 PM.
