(ALTOONA, PA:) Frostburg State managed just one hit and no
runs through the first nine innings, but scored one in the 10th and put an 8-spot on
the board in the 11th to get past Penn State Altoona 9-3 Monday afternoon at the Ivyside Field. The game was a make-up from April 1 when the Bobcats and
Lions played 1 1/2 scoreless innings before rain postponed the nightcap.
The action began with the Lions' fifth batter, Megan Turiano, in the bottom of
the second.
Frostburg pitcher Katelyn Coffey, who worked one scoreless frame
back on April 1, went all 11 innings to earn the win, scattering seven hits and
allowing one earned run while fanning 13 batters. Altoona pitcher Callie
Lyle (Brockway, PA/Brockway) pitched the first two innings of the game back on
April 1, but Emily Cummins (Spring Mills, PA/Penns Valley) started out today and
went eight solid innings, surrendering one unearned run and only one hit.
Cummins struck out a season-high 14 Bobcat hitters.
After seven innings of regulation are completed, every inning
thereafter is played by International Tiebreaker Rules, meaning a runner is
placed on second base to begin the frame. In the top of the 10th,
Frostburg bunted the runner to third and got a clutch two-out single from Meghan
Dabkowski to score the first run of the game.
Altoona answered in the bottom of the 10th when Melissa Claver
(State College, PA/State College) bunted Megan Turiano (Tyrone, PA/Tyrone) to
third base. After a strikeout, Lindsey Laudermilch (Hershey, PA/Hershey)
pinch hit for Cummins and reached on an error by the shortstop that scored
Turiano and tied the game at 1-1.
Because Cummins was a substitute already (entered for Lyle to
pitch in second inning), she could not re-enter, and Laudermilch went to the
mound in the 11th. Frostburg batted around the order, cracking six hits
and getting eight runs with the help of two Lion errors.
The hosts did score two in the bottom of the 11th but it was too
little, too late. Kate Markstein (Crown Point, IN/Crown Point) and
Nicolette Stimely (Lewistown, PA/Lewistown) each belted RBI singles in that
final frame. Catcher Kara Myers (Millheim, PA/Penns Valley) was 4-5 in the
game, and Stimely contributed two hits.
Altoona had opportunities to win the game in regulation, leaving
runners stranded at second and third in the fourth inning before missing a
golden opportunity in the ninth. With the bases loaded and no one out,
Stimely grounded into a 1-2-3 double play, and Turiano grounded out to shortstop
to end the threat.
Frostburg finished with eight hits and made two miscues in the
game. 11 of the 13 Bobcat hitters struck out at least once in a game that
featured a total of 29 K's.
The Bobcats improved to 14-16 overall and moved to 7-7 in
Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference play. The Lions fell to 4-22 and
1-11 in the league.
Penn State Altoona returns to action Wednesday for an AMCC
doubleheader against local rival Mount Aloysius. First pitch at the
Ivyside Field is set for 3:00 PM.
