Baker, Lady Mavs too much for Lions
1.19.08

(ALTOONA, PA:)  Three-time AMCC Player of the Year Amanda Baker scored 25 points, 20 in the first half, and Medaille easily downed host Penn State Altoona 77-54 Saturday at the Adler Gym.  With the victory, the Lady Mavs won their 13th straight game and improved to 7-0 in the conference.  The Lions fell to 6-7 overall and 4-3 in the AMCC.

The Lady Mavs made eight of their first 10 shots to start the game and never trailed as they built a 44-21 advantage at intermission.  Altoona kept it close early and found itself down just six nearly 13 minutes in.  But the 18th ranked team in the country (USA Today/ESPN Division III Top 25 Coaches Poll) finished out the half on a 21-4 run to blow the game wide open.

Penn State Altoona struggled from the field, connecting on just 30% of its attempts (23-76) including 5-21 from the three-point line.  Medaille, however, shot 50% in the first half and 43% on the game.

The Lions committed 23 turnovers which resulted in 30 Medaille points and were outscored 34-24 in the paint.

Baker, who played only 23 minutes, and the Penn State Altoona team were playing even (both had 25 points) five minutes into the second half.  The versatile 6-0 forward was nearly unstoppable and not only dominated inside, but converted midrange jumpers and even a three pointer.  Teammates Carissa Ferruccci and Amanda Walling, who scored 10 and 13 points, respectively, combined for nine rebounds, four assists, and five steals.

Erin McGowan (Duncansville, PA/Bishop Guilfoyle) and Alicia Glasser (Marion Center, PA/Marion Center) were the lone double figure scorers for Penn State Altoona.  McGowan finished with 18, and Glasser, who kept the Lions within striking distance early, netted 11 of her 13 in the first half and hit three treys.

Medaille opened the game on a 6-0 run that included two Baker baskets and led 15-5 on her fourth field goal at the 14:04 mark.  The Lady Mavs played their reserves the majority of the second half, but the Lions could get no closer than 19.

Penn State Altoona returns to action on Martin Luther King Day, Monday, January 21, when it travels to Mount Aloysius for a local AMCC rivalry game.  Tip time in Cresson is 6:00 PM.
