(ALTOONA, PA:) Pitt-Greensburg placed four players in
double figures and used a stifling full court pressure defense to force 30
turnovers and earn a 92-69 victory over host Penn State Altoona Wednesday
evening at the Adler Gym. The Lady Bobcats improved to 13-3 overall and
7-2 in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference while the Lions fell to 6-9
and 4-5 in the AMCC.
The contest was a tale of two halves as Altoona played neck and
neck with Greensburg and trailed by only five at intermission (43-38). But
UPG used a 16-4 run to open the second half to stretch the advantage to 59-43
less than five minutes into the period. Altoona would get no closer than
14 while, at one point, the Lady Bobcats led by as many as 34 (86-52).
Greensburg reserve Mary Cook scored all 16 of her points in the
first half, firing 6-9 from the floor and 4-4 from beyond the arc. As a
unit, UPG shot 50% from the field on the night and is just the second team this
season to shoot 50% or better from the floor against the Lions this year.
The Lady Bobcats were led by all-AMCC guard Tiffany Menhorn, who
scored 21 points on 8-14 shooting, grabbed six rebounds, and passed out five
assists. Complimenting Cook were teammates Kelsey Wilcox and Amanda
Sheaffer, who tallied 15 and 14, respectively.
Penn State Altoona received 15 points from Erin McGowan
(Duncansville, PA/Bishop Guilfoyle) and 14 from Courtney Carroll (Altoona,
PA/Bishop Guilfoyle). The Lions finished the game 25-58 from the floor
(43.1%) and 9-21 from beyond the arc (42.9%).
Greensburg turned the 30 Lion miscues into 38 points and held a
dominating 44-14 edge in the paint. The Lady Bobcats shot 52.5% from the
field in the second half (21-40) and out-rebounded the Lions 43-28.
Twenty-one of the visitors' rebounds were offensive and resulted in 17 second
chance points.
The Lions will try to snap their three-game losing streak this
Saturday, January 26, when Hilbert College comes to the Adler Gym for an AMCC
match-up. Tip off is set for 1:00 PM.
