(WASHINGTON, PA:) Washington & Jefferson bolted to a 15-2
lead after four minutes and never looked back en route to an 88-56 thumping of
Penn State Altoona Saturday in the Washington & Jefferson Holiday Inn Classic.
W&J improved to 2-0 on the year while Penn State Altoona was handed its second
straight setback.
The Lions were out-rebounded 51-22 and trailed by 24 (50-26) at
intermission. W&J outscored Penn State Altoona 28-12 in the paint and got
20 more points off second chance opportunities.
The second half lead for W&J reached as many as 38 with three
minutes and change remaining. The Presidents were an impressive 27-32 from
the charity stripe and shot 50% from three point range (5-10)
Penn State Altoona shot 33% from the field, connecting on 20 of
61 field goals and only 4 of 20 three pointers. The Lions did force W&J
into 27 turnovers which resulted in 19 points.
The Presidents shot 55% from the field on the day and had three
players reach double figure scoring. Emily Hays and Kennan Killeen each
poured in 18 points while teammate Maggie Gibson added 10 and seven rebounds.
Senior Erin McGowan (Duncansville, PA/Bishop Guilfoyle), who was
named to the all-tournament team, fronted
Altoona with 12 points including 6-6 on free throws. Freshman point guard
Courtney Carroll (Altoona, PA/Bishop Guilfoyle) finished with 11 points, three
assists, and three steals.
Altoona returns to action this Tuesday, November 20, to open the
home slate against local rival Juniata College. That game begins at 6:00
PM at the Adler Gym and will be followed by the Penn State Altoona and Grove
City men at 8:00 PM.
