(ALTOONA, PA:) Freshman Cassie Proper (Bellefonte,
PA/Bellefonte) and sophomore Alicia Glasser (Marion Center, PA/Marion Center)
combined for six of Penn State Altoona's 10 three pointers as the Lions bombed
their way to a 66-54 win over Saint Vincent Thursday at the Adler Gym. The
Lady Bearcats, who made only 3-10 long balls, fell to 1-4 overall while the
hosts improved to 1-4 and got their first win in five starts.
Trailing 24-22 at intermission, the Lady Bearcats used a 16-5
run to turn the tide and grab a 38-28 advantage with 13:44 left in the game.
But consecutive threes by Glasser and senior Erin McGowan (Duncansville,
PA/Bishop Guilfoyle) cut the deficit to four before Proper's triple with just
under four minutes to play gave the Lions a lead they would not relinquish.
Altoona led by eight with 3:32 remaining in the opening half
before the visitors closed the period on an 8-2 run. The Lions took 13
more field goal attempts than their counterparts but made only three more
buckets (10-40, 25%) and connected on just two three pointers in 14 tries.
But the squad heated up after the break, canning eight triples
along with 12 free throws to outscore the visitors 42-32 in the period.
After Saint Vincent standout Laura Klimchock made a pair of foul shots with 2:40
to play cutting the Bearcat deficit to 56-54, Altoona finished the game on a
10-0 run highlighted by two Kelli Steiner (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) field
goals and four Courtney Carroll (Altoona, PA/Bishop Guilfoyle) foul shots.
Glasser finished with 12 points and four rebounds while Proper
had nine points on three treys. Steiner came off the bench to score 10 points,
and, as a unit, the Altoona reserves outscored the Bearcat subs 31-7.
Carroll and Senior Brittany Poorman (Altoona, PA/Altoona) each chipped in nine
for the victors, who out-rebounded Saint Vincent 48-41.
The Lady Bearcats were fronted by Klimchock's 18 points and 8-9
free throw shooting. Teammate Janelle Reed had 14 points, and Gabbie
Kassis netted eight and pulled 11 boards.
Sixteen of the Lions' 21 field goals were assisted. Saint
Vincent had 17 steals and a gaudy 10 blocked shots, seven coming in the first
half.
Penn State Altoona returns to action on Saturday, December 1,
