Lions rout Hilbert for first conference win
12.1.07

(HAMBURG, NY:)  Every player on the Lion roster saw at least six minutes of floor time, and 11 different players scored as Penn State Altoona stomped Hilbert 59-33 Saturday afternoon.  Altoona won its second straight and improved to 2-4, 1-1 in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference as Hilbert fell to 0-6 and 0-2 in the AMCC.

The final 20 minutes were dominated by Penn State Altoona and featured 15 field goals on 32 attempts (47%).  Sophomore Alicia Glasser (Marion Center, PA/Marion Center) came off the bench and had nine of her game high 16 points in the second half, helping the Lion reserves outscore the Hilbert bench 29-4.

A 10-0 run capped off by an Erin McGowan (Duncansville, PA/Bishop Guilfoyle) lay up midway through the second half ballooned the Altoona lead from 15 to 25 points.  The highest Altoona advantage came with 27 seconds remaining when a Nicole Funk (Ellicott City, MD/Centennial) bucket made the score 59-31.

The Lions out-rebounded Hilbert 47-34 and pulled 21 offensive boards that turned into 14 second chance points.  Altoona forced 27 Lady Hawk turnovers resulting in 30 points and held a commanding 28-14 advantage in the pained area.

McGowan chipped in 10 points, and classmate Brittany Poorman (Altoona, PA/Altoona) added seven and five rebounds.

Only eight players were on the active roster for the Lady Hawks, who shot just 24% from the field in the game and were 0-6 from three point land.  Statistically, the Lions struggled from the field as well, firing 34% on the day (24-70) and making only 6-24 long balls.

Amanda McHale had a double-double for the Lady Hawks, scoring 12 points and grabbing 10 rebounds.  Teammate Amanda Ratajczak added 11.  The duo had eight of the squad's 11 field goals on the afternoon.

Hilbert used a 7-0 run midway through the first half and was leading 16-12 with 5:56 remaining in the period.  Altoona finally came alive, holding the Lady Hawks without a point while scoring 11 themselves to take a 23-16 lead into the locker room.

Penn State Altoona will seek its third straight victory this Wednesday, December 5, when Pitt-Bradford comes to the Adler Gym for a 6:00 PM tip.
