Lions start slow, never recover in loss to
Bobcats
2.13.08
(FROSTBURG, MD:) Frostburg State shot 45% from the field,
out-rebounded visiting Penn State Altoona 43-30, and never trailed in the game
as the Lady Bobcats earned a 75-55 victory over the Lions Wednesday evening.
FSU improved to 7-15 overall and 4-11 in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate
Conference. Altoona, which could have clinched a playoff berth with a win,
fell to 10-12 and 7-8 in the AMCC.
The Bobcats scored the first eight points and led 15-2 after an
Elizabeth Carrington lay up six minutes into the contest. A Sidra Bing
jumper made the score 26-12 at the 9:41 mark before the Lions used a 9-1 run to
cut the deficit to six (27-21) less than two minutes later.
But Frostburg survived the rally and used an 8-0 spurt of their
own to push the advantage to 15 and eventually take a 44-29 lead into the locker
room. The Bobcats made 50% of their first half field goals (17-34)
compared to just 10-27 shooting (37%) by Penn State Altoona. The Lions
struggled mightily from 3-point range, connecting on just 1-16 attempts on the
evening including 0-7 over the final 20 minutes.
Penn State Altoona was fronted by sophomore Alicia Glasser
(Marion Center, PA/Marion Center) and senior Brittany Poorman (Altoona,
PA/Altoona) with 10 points each.
Frostburg used a balanced attack that featured four players in
double figures and two more players with nine points apiece. Shanell
Williams scored a game-high 14 points and pulled eight rebounds while Carrington
scored 12 and went 8-8 from the charity stripe. As a team, FSU shot 19-21
from the line (90.5%) while Penn State Altoona went 12-16 (75%).
Amanda LaPorta and Ashley Anthony each added 10 for the winners,
and teammates Jaime Morningstar and Mercedes White tallied nine. The Lions
finished a dismal 36.2% from the floor and committed 21 turnovers.
The Bobcats assisted 15 of their 27 field goals while the
visitors had just six helpers on 21 made buckets. FSU turned the 21 Lion
miscues into 24 points and held an 18-14 edge in second chance points.
After Poorman and Natalie Sheehan (Johnstown, PA/Westmont
Hilltop) scored buckets for Altoona coming out of intermission, the Bobcats used
eight straight points and take a 55-33 lead with 15:07 remaining. Williams
lay up at the 5:13 mark of the second half gave the hosts their biggest
advantage of the night at 26 (71-45).
Penn State Altoona returns to action this Saturday, February 16,
for a 1:00 PM date with AMCC frontrunner Medaille College in Buffalo. If
Frostburg State loses any of its last three games, the Lions will automatically
receive their first bid to the conference playoffs since 2004.
