2007 Penn State Altoona Challenge Cup Tournament

MARIETTA EARNS ITS FOURTH TITLE IN AS MANY YEARS
9.16.06

CONSOLATION:        Albright College      3               Thiel College       0

ALTOONA, PA:  Albright struck quickly and never looked back as it downed Thiel 3-0 Sunday in the women's consolation game of the 2007 Penn State Altoona Challenge Cup Tournament.  The Lady Lions finished third in the four team field for the second consecutive year.

The first Albright goal came at the eight minute mark when Megan Gring headed in a beautiful cross from teammate Aileen Duddy.  Just before halftime, Gloria Alfonsi used a short pass in traffic from Stephanie Deswert and found the net.  The final tally came in the 78th minute when Lindsay Kurtz collected a rebound in front of the goal and banged it home to set the final.

For the second straight day, Thiel was held without a single shot.  Albright fired 20 attempts, eight of which were on goal, and earned eight corner kicks.  Lady Tomcat goalkeeper Jill Harry recorded five saves in the loss.

Gring and Deswert represented Albright on the all-tournament team.  Ashley Williams and Jamie Dawson were the all-tourney selections from Thiel.

CHAMPIONSHIP:        Marietta College     1               Penn State Altoona       0

ALTOONA, PA:  History repeated itself Sunday afternoon at the 2007 Penn State Altoona Challenge Cup Tournament when Marietta College captured its fourth consecutive tournament title by defeating host Penn State Altoona 1-0.  The Lady Pioneers are a perfect 8-0 in the four-year history of the Challenge Cup.

The game winner proved to be the first and only goal just four minutes into the game.  Tournament MVP Marianne Siders gave a long throw-in to teammate Vanessa Nicholls who booted home the game's lone tally.  A defensive battle would follow and a combined 34 fouls were whistled between the two squads.

Each team attempted just five shots as the majority of action happened in the middle third of the field.  Altoona freshman Alyssa Kanuch led the team with two shots, and standout forward Natalie Sheehan managed just one.

Sanders, Nicholls, goalkeeper Helen Hetzel, and last year's MVP Jennifer Wickerham represented Marietta on the all-tournament team.  Amanda Ebersole, Danielle Ivancich, Ally Richardson, and Sheehan were selected from Penn State Altoona.

The Lions dropped to 2-2 on the season and host Presidents Athletic Conference foe Washington & Jefferson on Tuesday evening at Spring Run Stadium.  Game time is 6:00 PM.
