10.26.06
The Penn State Altoona women's soccer team dropped their final game of the
season, a 2-0 loss Thursday night to Penn State Behrend at Spring Run Stadium.
The squad ended the 2006 campaign at 6-7-6 overall and 2-5-2 in AMCC play, good
enough for an eighth place finish in the ten-team conference. Penn State
Behrend scored its first goal just 3:15 into the game, as Whitney Putnam found
Marissa King in the center of the box for the easy punch-in and 1-0 lead.
Just before the first half ended, Behrend added their second and final goal of
the game when Jenna Haschets dropped a pass to Jen Plants who fired a laser that
hit the crossbar and bounced in. Altoona managed only one shot in the
contest while the Lions of Behrend attempted 21 shots. Penn State Altoona
goalkeeper Carol Opiela had four saves in the losing effort.
Women's Soccer beats Mount Aloysius
10.25.06
The Penn State Altoona women's soccer team narrowly kept its AMCC
playoff hopes alive, downing Mount Aloysius 1-0 Wednesday afternoon in
Cresson. The only goal of the day came at the 25:28 mark of the first
half, when the Lions' Kaitlin Bovard found Allie Schumacher for the
one-timer. The most remarkable stat of the game was that Altoona
out-shot the Lady Mounties 32-4 on the contest and attempted a season-high
24 shots on goal. Mount Aloyusius goalkeeper Laura Deely recorded an
unfathomable 23 saves in the contest. The Lions attempted eight corner
kicks and dominated in every statistical aspect of the game while managing
just one goal. The squad now takes on Penn State Behrend on Thursday
at 5 PM. The

Women's Soccer nabs non-conference win at Hood
10.24.06
The Penn State Altoona women's soccer team, led by co-captain Heather
Darnell, staged a miraculous comeback en route to a 2-1 overtime win at Hood
College Monday afternoon. After a scoreless first half for both teams,
Hood's Colleen Cruice scored via a Liz Rakowski pass just two minutes into the
second half, giving the Lady Blazers a 1-0 lead. Penn State Altoona didn't
notch the tying goal until the 87:11 mark, as Darnell netted the unassisted
tally with less than three minutes to go, sending the contest to overtime.
Just 41 seconds into the extra session, it was Darnell again, drilling the game
winner on a one-timer that beat Hood goalkeeper Nina Duron. Lion goalkeeper
Carol Opiela recorded eight saves in the contest as each team attempted 15 shots
on the day. Altoona improved to 5-6-4 overall and remained 1-4-2 in
conference play. To qualify for the playoffs, the Lions need to beat Mt.
Aloysius on Wednesday and Penn State Behrend on Thursday in the regular season
finale.
Women's Soccer drops AMCC contest to Medaille
10.22.06
The Penn State Altoona women's soccer team out-shot the Medaille Lady
Mavericks 18-6 on Sunday evening at Spring Run Stadium but still lost the game
3-1. The problem for Altoona was stopping the Lady Mavs Danielle Radlich,
who pulled the hat trick by netting all three Medaille tallies. She headed
in the first goal of the game off a Kelly Rosenthal direct kick at the 23:33
mark before taking a Kerri Clarkson pass for the breakaway and second goal.
Medaille led 2-0 at the half. With 15 minutes to play in the contest, the
Lions got on the board when Heather Darnell's direct kick led to an Allie
Schumacher header that found net, cutting the deficit to one. But Radlich
added an insurance goal just five minutes later, breaking through the Altoona
defense and punching in her third goal to put the game out of reach.
Altoona dropped to 4-6-4 overall and 1-4-2 in AMCC play. Tonight's game
was as close to a "must-win" as there gets for the Lions, who now need to beat
Mt. Aloysius (10/25) and Penn State Behrend (date still TBD) to have a chance at
making the AMCC playoffs.
Women's Soccer ties Pitt-Johnstown
10.18.06
The Penn State Altoona women's soccer team hung right with Division II
Pitt-Johnstown before preserving a 2-2 tie Wednesday night at Spring Run
Stadium. The Lady Cats' Alyssa McKinney opened up the scoring less than
two minutes in, drilling a shot from the top of the box to give UPJ the 1-0
lead. Co-captain Heather Darnell helped Altoona even the score when she
found Allie Schumacher off an indirect kick to tie the game at the 20:03 mark.
Johnstown took a 2-1 lead into the half via an Alicia Zack shot from the center
of the box that beat Lion goalkeeper Carol Opiela. Altoona once again
showed its resiliency, tying the game on a Brittany Bovard punch-in at the 61:31
mark. Both teams were held scoreless the rest of regulation and through
two overtimes, although UPJ had ample opportunities in the extra sessions.
Opiela was sensational for the Lions in overtime, coming up with two huge saves
and defending eight Lady Cat shots. Johnstown out-shot the Lions 21-8, but
attempted only three more shots on goal. Altoona returns to action this
Saturday as they travel to Penn State Behrend for a 1:00 PM start.

Walter each nabbed an assist. The tough evening was compounded for the
