OFFICIAL RELEASE

MARIETTA MAKES IT THREE OUT OF THREE
9.10.06

GAME 1 (consolation):        Albright College     9             Thiel College       0

ALTOONA, PA:  Albright's first goal was scored by Anne Curry off a Stephanie Deswert corner kick only 5:28 into the game.  Those two players would be more than active the rest of the contest as Albright shut out Thiel College 9-0 in the consolation game of the 2006 Penn State Altoona Fall Invitational.

Curry scored an unprecedented four goals on the afternoon while Deswert scored one goal and handed out three assists.  Megan Gring also scored two goals for Albright, who improved to 2-1 on the season.  Thiel was only able to attempt one shot on the game and had no shots on goal.  The Lady Tomcats dropped to
1-4 on the year.

Also getting in on the action for Albright was Jordan Smith (one assist), Kate Kelly (one goal), Gloria Alfonsi (one goal), Stephanie Fersch (one assist), and Kimberly Spataro (two assists).  The Lions cranked out 24 shots in the game, 19 of them on goal.

Albright finished in third place in the tournament, losing yesterday to champion Marietta on a shootout.

GAME 2 (championship):        Marietta College     1               Penn State Altoona       0

ALTOONA, PA:  A lack of offense was the story of the game for the Lions of Penn State Altoona, as Marietta notched their third championship in as many years at the 2006 Penn State Altoona Fall Invitational.

The only goal of the game came 26 minutes into the first half, when Allison Williams hit Jessica Martinez for the score.  Marietta had 25 total shots, 10 on goal, but a combination of good defense and solid goalkeeping by Altoona's Carol Opiela kept the Lions close.

Marietta's goalkeeper, Jenna Freeman, had four saves on the afternoon as Penn State Altoona only got eight shots off.  Standout freshman Heather Darnell was unable to get loose as Marietta's blanketing defense made it troublesome for the young Lions to muster offense.

This is the first year that Penn State Altoona has made it to the championship game in its own tournament.  The women are at W&J on Wednesday before returning home next Saturday, September 16, for a 1:00 pm game with Bethany College.  Altoona is 1-1 on the season.
