Eight men's and women's swimmers named all-AMCC

The first ever Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference men's and women's swimming all-conference teams were announced Wednesday afternoon.  Penn State Altoona was well represented, totaling eight swimmers (four men and four women) on the first and second teams.  On the women's side, Chally Wine was a first team performer in the 200 IM and a second team selection in the 100 Fly.  Teammate Brittany Yingling earned first team honors in the 100 Back and second team distinction in the 200 Back and 200 IM.  Sarah D'Ambrosia was selected to the first team in the 200 Breast.  Wine, Yingling, D'Ambrosia, and Sarah O'Donald teammed up to grab second team all-conference recognition in the 200 Free Relay, 200 Medley Relay, and 400 Free Relay.  The Lion men placed just one swimmer, Doug Field, on the AMCC first team, nabbing the spot in the 200 IM.  Field garnered second team recognition in two events, the 100 Fly and 100 Free.  The team of Field, Jon Bednar, Chris Hickey, and Ed Gorinski were second team all-conference in the 200 Free Relay, 400 Free Relay, 200 Medley Relay, and 400 Medley Relay.  Like Field, Bednar earned second team honors in two events including the 100 and 200 Breast.  The Lion men and women finished second overall in the four-team AMCC at the inaugural championship meet, which was held as part of the Grove City Invitational.  The Penn State Behrend men and women each claimed AMCC gold and swimmers from both sides dominated the all-conference selections.  For a complete listing of both the men's and women's AMCC all-conference swimming teams, click the links below.

Swimming teams take second place at inaugural AMCC Championships

The Penn State Altoona men's and women's swimming teams took second place at the first-ever Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Championships February 8-10 in Grove City.  The championships were part of the Grove City Invitational and also served as the Presidents Athletic Conference (PAC) Championship meet.  On the women's side, freshman Brittany Yingling placed 1st in the conference in the 100 yard backstroke with a time of 1:04:63.  That time was good enough for fifth place at the overall meet.  She finished second in the AMCC in the 200 Free Relay, 200 Medley, 50 Back, and 400d Medley.  She finished in the top ten of the entire meet in all the aforementioned events.  Other highlights from the women's AMCC Championship included Chally Wine taking first place in the 200 IM and second in the 100 Fly and Sarah D'Ambrosia taking first in the 200 Breaststroke.  The men's swimming team, who also finished second overall in the conference, was led by freshman Doug Field.  He finished first in the 200 IM and second in the 100 Fly and 100 Freestyle.  He also finished second overall as a member of four different relays.  He finished in the top 16 of the entire Grove City Invitational in all the aforementioned events.  Other highlights from the men's AMCC Championship included Chris Hickey taking second in the 200 Freestyle and Jonathan Bednar earning 2nd in the 100 Breaststroke and second in the 200 Breaststroke.  For full meet results, click the link below.

Men's and Women's swimming at AMCC Championships...Follow it LIVE!

The Penn State Altoona men's and women's swimming and diving teams are set to compete at the first ever Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Championship meet Thursday through Saturday (2/8-2/10).  The event is part of the Grove City Invitational, which features 11 schools and also serves as the Presidents Athletic Conference (PAC) Championship meet.  The Lion women are 7-2 overall and second place in the four-team AMCC.  The Altoona men are 4-4 overall and, like the women, hold second place entering the championships.  Both teams trail Penn State Behrend in the conference standings. 
The meet will be conducted according to the Three-Day Established Program with 1,000 Freestyle, as set out in Rule 8-4-4 of the NCAA Rulebook.  There will be preliminary events beginning at 10 AM each day with the final events beginning at 6 PM on Thursday and Friday.  Saturday's finals begin at 5:30 PM.  Participating teams include Bethany, Chatham, Grove City, St. Vincent, Washington & Jefferson, and Westminster, all from the PAC.  Frostburg State, Behrend, Altoona, and Pitt-Bradford represent the AMCC while College Misericordia will compete as an independent.  To view live, day by day results from the entire three day tournament, click the link below.

Yingling, Hickey named AMCC Swimmers of the Week

Two Penn State Altoona swimmers were selected as AMCC Swimmers of the Week for the week of January 22-29.  Freshman Brittany Yingling has led the Altoona women to a 7-2 record overall record and second place in the AMCC standings.  Yingling took first place in the 200 fly with a time of 2:36.72 and a second in the 200 backstroke (2:29.33) in a dual meet loss to Hood College on Saturday.  This is Yingling's third Swimmer of the Week selection this season as she also earned the honor on November 6 and November 20.  Freshman Chris Hickey nabbed his second AMCC Swimmer of the Week award this year with the first coming on November 6.  In a dual meet with Hood College, Hickey took first place in the 200 backstroke (2:13.28) and was a part of the winning 400 medley relay (4:30.28).  He also was the runner-up in the 1,000 freestyle with a time of 11:48.78.  Yingling and Hickey will lead their respective squads into the Grove City Invitational and AMCC Championships beginning February 8 in Grove City, PA.

Men's and women's swimming fall at Hood meet

The Penn State Altoona men's and women's swimming squads dropped a non-conference meet at Hood College on Saturday.  The Blazer men defeated the Altoona men 86-67 while the Hood women upended the Lion women 108-83.  Of the 11 men's and 11 women's events, Hood College took first place in all but five.  Brittany Yingling scored one of Altoona's first place finishes in the 200 Yard Butterfly with a time of 2.36.72.  Greg Wehler captured first in the men's 200 Yard Breastroke, clocking in at 2.59.48.  The three other first place finishes came in the Men's and Women's 400 Yard Medley Relays and the men's 200 Yard Back Stroke (Chris Hickey, 2.13.28).  The squads have completed the regular season and will compete at the AMCC Championships and Grove City Invitational in Grove City, PA, from February 8-10.

Swimming and Diving competes at Penn State Behrend meet

The Penn State Altoona men's and women's swimming and diving teams competed in an AMCC tri-meet Saturday at Penn State Behrend.  Frostburg State was the other conference school competing.  The host Behrend Lions were victorious in both the men's and women's meets.  The Behrend men beat the Bobcat men 56-40 and downed the Altoona men 58-35.  The Penn State Behrend women defeated Frostburg's women 62-38 and knocked off the Penn State Altoona women 58-42.  Frostburg and Penn State Altoona split their series with the Frostburg men winning 50-43 and the Lion women 54-40.  The Penn State Altoona women's team is now 7-2 overall while the men's team dropped to 4-3.  The Altoona women were victorious in the 400 Yard Medley Relay, 400 Yard Freestyle Relay, and freshman Brittany Yingling won the 200 Yard IM.  On the men's side, the Lions won the 400 Yard Medley Relay, 400 Yard Freestyle Relay, and freshman Chris Hickey won the 200 Yard Backstroke.  The squads are back in action on January 27 for a meet at Hood College.

The Penn State Altoona men's and women's swimming teams picked up a pair of AMCC wins over Pitt-Bradford Saturday afternoon at the Adler Pool.  The Lion women downed the Lady Panthers 78-22 while the men nabbed a 73-44 victory.  The afternoon featured 11 women's events (9 won by Altoona) and 11 men's events (7 won by Altoona).  Freshman Brittany Yingling had a solid day on the women's side, 200 Yard IM and 100 Yard Butterfly.  Teammate Megan Holloway won the 1000 Yard Freestyle before finishing second in the 100 Yard Backstroke.  On the men's side, Chris Hickey, Ed Gorinski, and Jonathan Bednar each captured first place in two events.  Hickey won the 1,000 Yard Freestyle and 100 Yard Backstroke, Gosinski took the 50 and 100 Yard Freestyle events, and Bednar won top honors in the 200 Yard IM and the 500 Yard Freestyle.  The women improved to 6-1 on the season while the men are 4-1 overall.  Next Saturday, both squads will be tested at Penn State Behrend in a tri meet with Frostburg State and the host Behrend Lions. 


Yingling named AMCC Swimmer of the Week

Penn State Altoona swimmer Brittany Yingling was selected as the AMCC Women's Swimmer of the Week for the week of November 13-20.  Yingling place first in both of her individual events, the 200 IM (2:34.29) and the 100 backstroke (1:06.15) to help the Lions earn wins over Gallaudet and Arcadia in a double dual meet.  She was also a member of the winning 200 medley relay.  Yingling's time in the 100 back puts her at the top of the AMCC performance list in that event.  The freshman from Hollidaysburg also took Swimmer of the Week honors for the week of October 30-November 6.  She has anchored the squad to a 4-1 overall record which is currently tops in the four-team AMCC.  Yingling and the swimming team will be back in action on December 2 when Bethany College comes to the Adler Pool.

Men's and Women's Swimming win tri-meet at Arcadia

The Penn State Altoona men's and women's swimming teams traveled to Arcadia University on Sunday, November 19, 2006 for a Double Dual Meet with host Arcadia and Gallaudet Unversity.  Both squads came out victorious as the men topped Arcadia 62-24 and Gallaudet 49-46.  The Lion women downed Arcadia 57-38 and Gallaudet 49-46.  Brittany Yingling pulled in two first place finishes in the 100 back and 200 IM to lead the Altoona women.  Other first place winners were Megan Holloway, Sarah D'Ambriosia, Sarah O'Donald, and Megan Warner, who claimed top honors in the Medley Relay.  The men's Jonathan Bednar was a double winner in the 200 IM and the 500 Free while Ed Gosinski was a double winner in the 50 Free and 100 Breast.  Other first place winners were Chris Hickey, Doug Field, and Greg Wehler.  Hickey, Bednar, Gosinski and Field pulled a first place win in the men's Medley Relay.  The women improved their overall record to 4-2 while the men check in at 2-1.  Full meet results can be accessed from the men's and women's swimming schedule pages.
 

Three Lions earn AMCC Player of the Week honors

Three Penn State Altoona athletes have been selected as AMCC Players of the Week for their outstanding performances.  Junior Sara Kylor (Huntingdon, PA/Huntingdon) earned the nod as women's volleyball Player of the Week after Penn State Altoona captured its first ever AMCC Championship last weekend.  Kylor put away 39 kills, averaging 5.57 kpg during the AMCC championship weekend, while maintaining a .260 attack percentage.  She also collected 30 digs (4.29 dpg) in leading the Lions to their first ever NCAA Tournament berth.  Brittany Yingling (Hollidaysburg, PA/Hollidaysburg) and Chris Hickey (West Chester, PA/West Chester East), both swimmers, have also garnered Player of the Week honors for their efforts at the St. Vincent meet on Saturday.  Yingling posted three of four first place finishes in the women's dual meet win over St. Vincent. In addition to winning the 100 and 200 backstroke, she was in the final relay which took first place to win the meet.  Hickey took three first places in the 200 free, 200 back and 200 free relay in a dual meet with St. Vincent.  He broke the school record in the 200 free, posting a time of 1:45.23.
 

Women's Swimming downs St. Vincents

The Penn State Altoona Swim team traveled to St. Vincent College on Saturday.  The Women won while the Men lost.  Major scores for the teams were Brittany Yingling in the 100 Backstroke and the 200 Backstroke and in the 200 Freestyle Relay which brought home the win with Yingling,  Challyndel Wine, Megan Warner and Sarah O'Donald.  Erica Stephen pulled a First place in the 50 Freestyle by out touching her opponent with a time of 28.30.  Megan Holloway took first in the 1000 Freestyle with a time of 12:32.01.  Challyndel Wine took first in the 100 Free with a time of 59.01.  Sarah D'Ambrosia helped clinch the win in the 200 IM with a time of 2:33.10 for the first.  The women's final score was Penn State Altoona 117, St. Vincent 108.

Women and Men finish second at Bradford Relay

The Penn State Altoona men's and women's swimming and diving teams competed at the Pitt-Bradford Relays on Saturday, October 28.  The squads finished second out of the five competing teams.  The champion of both the men's and women's events was Penn State Behrend, who finished far ahead of the other four squads.  To view full results from the meet, click on the Penn State Altoona schedule page and click the link to the meet results.
 

Women's Swimming wins first meet against Chatham

The Penn State Altoona women's swimming and diving team picked up its first victory of the season in dramatic fashion, defeating Chatham College 103-101 Saturday afternoon at the Adler Gym.  The Lions were down heading into the last event of the day, the 200 Yard Freestyle Relay, but grabbed first place in the event to take the overall meet.  The team of Erica Stephan, Sabrina Eisl, Sarah O'Donald, and Megan Holloway finished with a time of 1:56.15 in the relay, besting Chatham's second place team by eight seconds.  The squad is now 1-1 on the season and returns to action next Saturday, October 28, for the Pitt-Bradford Relay.  This will be the debut of the Penn State Altoona men's swimming and diving team as well.  For full results against Chatham, Click Here.

Women's Swimming and Diving opens season with loss to Mansfield

The Penn State Altoona women's swimming and diving team opened the 2006-2007 season on Saturday, falling to Division II Mansfield 119-77.  Mansfield won first place in 10 of the 11 events on the afternoon, with Penn State Altoona taking first in the 200 Yard Freestyle Relay.  The team of Erica Stephan, Sabrina Eisl, Sarah D'Ambrosia, and Megan Holloway finished with a time of 1.55.38, besting the second place team from Mansfield by 46 tenths of a second.  The women's squad is back in action next Saturday as they host Chatham College for a 2:00 PM meet.  For full event results, Click Here.
