1.
Pick a region
of the world that you have an interest in. If you are unsure where you would
like to go, visit the Office of Education Abroad’s website at
www.altoona.psu.edu/studyabroad to explore all the opportunities that are
available to you.
2.
After you have
picked a region, pick several countries that interest you.
3.
Once you have
picked several countries that interest you, visit the Office of Education
Abroad’s website at
www.altoona.psu.edu/studyabroad to investigate programs in your countries of
interest.
4.
Once you have
found several programs of interest and have investigated them, visit the Office
of Education Abroad to learn more about the application process and to see what
programs will best fit your academic and personal needs.
5.
After
narrowing your choices, based on academic and personal needs, talk to or email
former participants to find answers to your questions (i.e. what is the food
like, what are the classes like, etc). Also, talk to your Academic Advisor to
make sure that your program will fit your academic needs. Talk with your
parents and give them all the details about the program and advise them to check
out the website
www.altoona.psu.edu/studyabroad to answer any other questions or concerns they
may have.
Note:
Please make sure to have any questions or concerns you have about a program or
the study abroad experience answered by the Office of Education Abroad, the
study abroad host institution, or a former participant before making a final
decision about a program.
6.
After deciding
on a program, visit the Education Abroad Advisor to discuss the application
process, the eligibility requirements, (such as G.P.A., language requirements
and class standing), application deadlines, and scholarships that are available
to you.
7.
Once you have
decided on a program, print the application and begin to consider answers to
essay questions (if applicable) and ask your professors to fill out a reference
form for you.
8.
Start
researching scholarship opportunities to assist in funding your study abroad
experience. Visit
http://www.international.psu.edu/students_study_abroad/info_financial_aid.htm
to find out about the financial aid that is available to you.
9.
The final step
will be to fill out your application and turn it in to the Office of Education
Abroad by the scheduled deadline.
Note:
The earlier you start researching your study abroad options the easier it
becomes to fit it into your academic schedule and to find funding for your study
abroad adventure. Most semester-long and academic-year programs require
students to apply a year in advance.
