Tips for Successful Study Abroad Programs

  1. Be active in recruiting students and promoting your program

    • Talk to your classes about your program

    • Talk to colleagues about visiting their classes to talk about your program

    • Talk to related student groups and organizations

    • Send emails to students who have taken the semester-long course in the past

    • Connect with colleagues and other campuses about your program

    • Hold at least one information session

    • Participate in the Fall Study Abroad Fair

    • Email flyers to interested students and colleagues throughout the university

    • Promote scholarships to students and encourage all to apply

  1. Reduce overall program costs
    • Choose less expensive destinations like Central America versus Europe

    • Reduce in-country costs by staying in one location and using local transportation for day trips

    • Include low cost activities such as free museums, walking tours, historical sites, etc.

  1. Other ways to create more viable programs
    • Choose locations where students have an interest (check with the Education Abroad Advisor for this information)

    • Choose semester-long courses that are required, have high enrollments or multiple sections, and/or have strong student interest

    • Make programs multi-campus such as the HDFS program between Altoona and Mont Alto

    • Make programs multi-divisional and/or multi-degree such as London for ENGL and HIS

    • Make study abroad program available to upper and lower division students (credit requirements will need to differ for the two levels)

Assistance the Education Abroad Advisor can provide:

  • Create program website

  • Create and print flyers (flyers can be made electronic as well)

  • Distribute flyers around campus

  • Arrange the Information Session

  • Provide faculty with email addresses for students who have taken semester-long course(s) in the past

  • Advise students on scholarships and filling out forms

  • Collect information from students

  • Assist with filling out required paperwork
